The Editor Kenansville .North Carolina Dear Sir; I have been entirely unable to do what I had intended doing, send articles on the lives of old Alaskan Sourdoughs,, but will do it as soon as I lay some of my present duties down. I am doing three things sim ultaneously clearing a site for a new school at Dot Lake, working daily at Tok, and trying to entirely complete my home1, here so that the teacher tor the fall might live in it. Even so I do have a few obser vations to relate presently. Last fall I tried to drive to Eagle and failed- though I did get there. I left with a young boy - aged 18 -, Bill Moles of Idaho He wanted to see Eagle and I wanted to be one spring of the rod tip. With no pause come forward a galn, releasing the line from under your finger when the rod is out to about halfway between vertical and horizontal. As the lure passes over your mark, stop the line by pressing your forefinger against the edge of the spool Some do it by starting to arank, but that's not. so accurate. The great advantage of this ver tical cast is that with the rod tip going straight toward your mark, the lure must go pretty close to it. With a side-swipe, accuracy depends on releasing the line at some very exact point of a semicircle, a diffi cult thing to do. : .... 1 WPont Drive-In Theatre Highway 258 - Bichlands Road"-' 2 miles out of Kinston WEEK BEGINNING JULY 26th' f Sunday Monday "Bachelor And The Bobby Soxer" Cary Grant ? We drove by' Chicken, where currently the F. E." Company is 'carrying on extensive mining operations, Jack Wade, where min-1 lng has been going on for so years and on to the Forty Mile road camp. Ail of the distance we went minus trouble - the distance was 1S6 miles to the camp. But the re maining SO miles was -the bottle neck. We had muddy trails only -all cut into the side of mountains -below which rushed swift creeks. Three of these creeks had to be forded - O'Brien, Columbia and Liberty.- We got across O'Brien all right for a "Cat" pulled us across. To go to Columbia creek 22 miles - required 12 hours of struggling. Many times we were almost hope lessly stuck - even so along would ventually come some powerful road vehicle and pull us out. At Columbia creek we met our Waterloo - for we drove into the raging torrents and tltere the motor cut off on us. We were stalled in the middle with the current almost pushing the Jeep with it. Fortunately we found an old Ford truck nearby - it was the only piece of equipment that hadn't been moved that day to another capip Liberty about eight miles futher on towards Eagle. This truck managed, to extract the Jeep from its predicament - but then we couldn't start the Jeep at all. Night was upon us, rain was pour ing down, we were all alone' among the mills of the Forty Mile area. At that time they certainly didn't ap peal to us.1 We went into an aban doned tent there and found two m,44iu,aai Dni nn nil ctmra 1 1 ' h n oil stove still was burning. Tha patter of the rain was somewhat soothing and tha roaring of the creek was the most sublime roar I have ever heard. Now, I know why the old timers love to live in the great Alaskan woods alone.. . -- I About midnight we awoke cold ' for our oil had burned out Immed iately we looked for another tent. The tent we found had a wood burning stove la it so we made a fire and went to sleep- comfortably. Occassionally I'd have to get up and put more wood on the fire. During the night I awoke - start led - for I heard a terriffic grunt and scratching upon the tent Wall I wanted to move - but vhere? I crept towards the opening in front of the tent - peered out &nd there not ten feet away stood a terriftic bear. He was as startled as I - for he leaped Into the stream and fled whence he came. I'm glad he fled -for he apparently knew where to go. I don't know where I'd have gone if I had had to vacate. Even so, I slept somewhat uneasily. The next morning was lovely. All about us birds were chirping r squirrels were darting here and there - and the sun shone brightly. Even so it was marred by the stub born Jeep which still refused to budge.- Undaunted, we took off on foot for Liberty camp, eight miles distance. After walking five or six miles, a Dodge power-wagon with three Road Commission employees (headed for Eagle) came along. They took us up and together we pursued our pilgrimage to Eagle. Even in the power wagon we had to use a wench to get up one hill. The trip from there into Eagle took five hours. In all we'd actually travelled twenty hours. We arrived in Eagle - remained there three hours and then set out for the Jeep and the trail back home. One of the men with us was a mechanic - so soon he had the Jeep going as well as new. It had rained so much the previous night that he had to literally drag the Jeep twelve miles to O'Brien camp. Here I managed to get a new fan belt and the Jeep was ready for the remaining distance home. Wei), we made the trip - but it was not pleasant - though I'll always ap preciate the experience., . Work has been going on sporadi cally for fifty miles on this road. Lt. Billy Mitchell, of aviation reknown, had been commissioned to build the road to Valdez back in 1903. Work was finally stopped on the road when gold was discovered where Fairbanks now stands, and the court at Eagle was transferred to the new boom town of Fairbanks. Judge Wickersham was the Federal Judge then. Today the oldtimers of Eagle actually see what they had given up hopes of seeing - a road into Eagle and cars streaming in every day - especially on week-ends. They see it - and they worry. They won der if Eagle will soon be disturbed by some of the undesirable coming into other populated areas of Alas ka. Finally their homes, which they could formerly leave unbarred, will have to be locked. The chief of police might even nave to maintain order. They don't want the even and leisurely tempo of their lives to be bothered. Formerly their lives had been lived in a care-free manner. It is one of the remaining placess -few in number - where money isn't practically the entire cause of ex istence. This past Friday night after I got off work - just after midnight -I took off for Eagle again - this time in our car. A former Pennsylvanian, Mike Molchen, went with me. This time we drove over the entire dis- e only convertible that outsells Ford! Test Drive America's No. 1 Convertible!. Hillbilly Jlit i Parade NELSON KINO ' . We were in Eagle before the townspeople were aroused from their nights sleep. Nevertheless, our next door neign bor - Helen Bauer - saw us and insisted that we go into her home and eat breakfast - which she pre pared for us. We remained 'in Eagle all day Saturday and Sunday - visiting the people and looking through old court records of the town. Mike thoroughly enjoyed the town and its people. One old lady there who had never ridden in a car was taken for a ride. She was as elated as a child. She is 87 years young - and has been in Alaska for 65 years. Mike was especially impressed by the Indians' fish wheels and their drying salmon. They hang these salmon much as people in Duplin hang tobacco - only they dry by the heat of the sun- whereas Duplin- ites use fire to heat tobacco. The salmon of the Eagle area are es pecially delicious and a thrill to catch. One other interesting trip Betty, Anita and I took a couple of weeks ago. We left Dot Lake and drove to weight.) " There are many beautiful drives in Alaska. I have never driven to Haines, Valdez, Circle or Livengood - nor to Cantwell. I hope to cover them all before I go back to North Carolina on a visit next summer. When I go I'll take five hundred slides that I have made in Alaska. I'll show them to any group in Duplin County - school or other wise. You folks come up and see your Alaska - enjoy it and the thrills of the Northland.
