. "The Big -Char ." 'tl.e college
scholarship project announced re
cently by .the North Carolina. Bank-
" ers' Association, has been approved
and endorsed by Govenor William
B Umstead and leading educators
over the state, it was announced
today by John P. Stedman, Presi
dent of the Association and Presi
dent of The Scottish Bank la Lum-
In a letter addressed to the As
sociation, Governor Umstead said:
, -i am happy to give my approval
' and endorsement of the new project,
The Big Change," which is being
sponsored by the North Carolina
Bankers Association. I believe that
- your organization and its President,
lira. John P. Stedman, should be
commended for bringing this con
, (tractive and, positive program to
the attention of the young people
of North Carolina. We in North
' Carolina do have a great state with
many possibilities for all. I have
always felt that 'there Is adventure
and opportunity for any young per
son within the boundries of North
, Carolina." - ' -
; "The purpose of the oratorical
contest in "the state's schools is to
point out to high school students
the greatness of their home state,"
Mr. Stedman said. He said ; that
North Carolina's progressive spirit
is better known to out-of-state
people than It is to the home folk,
and that if North Carolina's great
ness is taken too much for granted
by its residents, its progress will be
retarded.
More than $6,000 has already been
pledged foe the contest by 19 North
Carolina banks, and other banks are
making pledges daily. Top award
will amount to $1600, second placer
in the state-wide contest will re

$600. The prize money will be de

winners a $10.00 defense bond and
the division winners will , receive
$500.00 in money.

More Milk Per Cow
Is What Pays Off
"More milk tier iw what
really pays off in dairy business,"
says Lee wmiams,, who operates a
small dairy farm near Marble in
Western North Carolina's Cherakea
County.
Williams firmly believes "it takes
just as much feed to maintain a
1,000 pound low-Droducins cow as
a 1,000 pound high producer." And
ne's trying to select his foundation
stock from high producers.
G. H. Farley, county agent for
the N. C. State College Agricultural
Extension Service, says Williams'
small farm nestles in a warm valley
between two tree-covered moun
tains. The previous owqer had been
unable to make enough money on
me Diace to Dav the taxes. Rut with
the assistance of the Farmers Rnnu
Administration, Williams has trans-
lonnea me vauey ana hillsides into
an area of lush, green Ladino clover
and grass.
Williams started producing Grade
A milk for sale commercially four
years ago. He only had two cows.
Now he has a herd of nine high
producing pureDreos and grades.
All along he has emphasized high
production In buildins hie hawl
says County Agent Farley. Two of
am cows nave Deen miucing around
eight gallons each per day. At pre
sent milk Drices. William flnm.
leach of these cows are bringing
in more man siuu per month after
the haul bill is paid.
Williams Is onntinnina hie dj
improvement work. By taking ad
vantage of the proven sires of the
artificial breeding program, he fig
ures he will "get the farthest in
the shortest time."
"If you happen to be around here
in the next few years you will
really see something," says Williams,
pointing to his fine heifer calves.
