Mr. A. Lanier, head of the Mag nolia Market, which was organized last spring and operated for the first time this fall, reports that over 40,600 baskets of potatoes had been sold up to October 1st ' and that more than $78,000 has been paid out to. potato growers in this area. ' v Mr. Lanier said they were pleased with the 'opening season. He anti cipates that farmers in Duplin next year will plant more sweet pota toes. Following the afternoon program Eastern North Carolina Fox Hunters Organize; Duplin Man Named Director The Eastern Carolina Fox Hunt ers Association, Inc., was formed in Goldsboro Friday night at a meeting of fox hunters at Griffin's Barbecue. M. R. Garris of LaGrange, was elected to head the group as presi dent for its first year of activities. The association will affiliate with the N. C. Fox Hunters Association. Ellis Vestal of Kenansville was re elected vice-president and Mrs. Dora Betty Bell was renamed sec retary - treasurer. The annual meeting was held in the local school auditorium with nearly 500 farm members, white and colored, attending. President Sim mons presided and gave an inspir ing talk at the opening on what 'the Farm Bureau had and does ' mean to him. Former County Agent Lacy Weeks, introduced the speaker, John - RIetzel, Assistant North Car Una Commissioner of Agriculture who ! was pinch-hitting for the State Com missioner L. Y. (Stag) Balentine. Mr. Rietzel spoke for about 39 minutes on the progress the farm ers throughout the nation and es pecially in North Carolina have made in recent years and attributed a large part of their success to the efforts of the Farm Bureau. He said practically all national and state legislation in the interest of the farmer is influenced by the Farm Bureau which is the official mouth piece of the farmer. He urged the members to get out and secure more membership in Duplin. The mem bership now standing at approxi mately 1400 should be more than double that figure in Duplin. Mayor J. R. Grady of Kenansville, welcomed the farmers to town. Paul Shackleford of Wayne County, field representative of the Farm Bureau, spoke a few words ' and paid tribute to the work of Presi dent LeRoy Simmons. Following the meeting a barbecue dinner was served in the school lunch room. a picnic supper will be held. Every one is asked to bring a picnic basket. Transportation will be fur nished to all who wish to attend. 4 Arrested Here Four persons were nabbed by of ficers at the intersection of high ways' 24 and 11, center of town here, last Saturday morning before day with a load of non-tax paid liquor. Driving a 1941 Mercury, Perry Al len Heath, white, 19 of Beulaville, owner- of the car; James Elbert Pitts, white. 19, of Pink Hill; Bar Ian Smith, Negro, age 60 of Rich lands and Bemice Edwards, a negro youth were arrested. The youth was bundled in an overcoat and al most escaped detection because of his size. They were all charged with possession and transportation of non-tax paid whiskey. The auto was confiscated.
