Tom Davis of. Pink Hill is the
senior member and chairman of the
Lenoir Comity Board of. Public Wel
fare. Named to the board in July,
194 he succeeded former chairman,
Jack Rider, whose- term on - the
board had expired in April, 19SS.
A former mayor of Pink Hill and
prominent farmer and business
man, ttevls nas had, brief whirl
in the political arena. He tilted un
successfully with' incumbent Marlon
A. Parrott, local ' attorney, for the
State Legislature in 1950. V w
Davis' board is responsible for
coordlnatlag all phases of the pub
lic welfare .program in Lenoir Coun
ty. Once a month the board meets
with the superintendent, or acting
superintendent,' to plan future work
and to review the caseload. Before
a .welfare recipient 'is terminated
from 'the program, his case Is In
vestigated thoroughly by the board
nd the caseworker within whose j
realm of activity the case' falls. The
same process applies to new cases.
The caseworker theoretically Is pro
vided an opportunity' to defend his
or her recommendations, In , the

In addition to the actual case
work review, Davis and the other
two members are expected to be
thoroughly advertent to the needs
ot -the department, both as regards
finances and .personnel. The board
acts as a filter for job applications
which are submitted to the County
Commissioners as the final authori

Woman Dies
Mrs. W. H. Hughes, 73, native of
Kinston died at her home in San
ford, Fla.,. Thursday afternoon. Fun
eral services, were held there Sun
day afternoon. She' was a sister of
Mrs. Earl Howard of Pink Hill.

ston, Friday, March 5.
Mrs. Howard is the former Miss

Day of Prayer Held
At the Pink Hill Presbyterian
Church at 7:30 p.m. March 5, a ser
vice of Worship was held in ob
servance of World Day of Prayer.
Rev. N. P. Farrior was in charge and
assisted by several women of the
church. The theme of Worship ser
vice was, "That They May Have
Life" taken from John 10:10. An
offering 'was taken for World Mis
sion.
The singing of "Bless Be The Tie
That Binds." closed the service.

accident occured on Rockford
Bridge on a rural road near La-
Grange in January. 1952. Miss Succs
was a passenger in a car owned by
Marietta Whitfield, and operated by
Rachel Whitfield. Kennedy was a
passenger in a vehicle owned by
