'., "pHE prophets of Israel are Sin.

. thousands': of miles , away from
;V here, thousands of years ago. Yet
1 the problems of mankind are much
I the same, then as now. The proph

say bluntly what
-it was. . But few M
'prophets often 'S
A
'used that blanket
i word "sin." No
'body's in favor of
sin. What the
prophet always
did .was to name Dr. Foreman '
certain particular sins. These hab
its. these acts, these customs, he
would , say these are what our
country . is dying from. These
things are fatal. .So it was in
800 B.C., so it is in 1954 A.D.
fLiquor Js Not Alone
' It is only fanatics who believe
that some one sin is by itself
destroying the country. No sin,
in fact, exists by itself. Also it is
true that when a country is de
stroyed, as Israel was destroyed,
it dies of more than one disease.
The prophet Amos named a num
ber of evils which were eating
into the vitality of his nation and
people. The consumption of liquor
was one of these. But Amos never
said that liqiior was the only thine
wrong with- his country. He as
sociates it with selfishness, greed,
indifference to real' problems,
adultery, dishonesty and ether
sins. One of the bad features of
liquor is that it attaches itself to
other evils and makes them worse.
There would be speeding on the
highways even if everyone were
always cold sober; but drinking
drivers make the problem worse
and the accidents more often
fatal. (There really can't be such
a thing as a drunken ' driver a
drunk' can't drive at all. It's the
drinking drivers who make, the
trouble.) There would be murders
if whiskey had never been heard
from. But every day murders are
reported in the papers that would
no doubt never have been cord
mitted if everyone concerned had
been sober at the time. Rape;
and seduction are hot unheard of
by any means, in ! Mohammedan
countries where alcoholic drinks
are completely forbidden." But
liquor pushes many young-people
over the edge who without it could
retain their self-control and self
respect, but with it in them, lose
both.
The Best People'
In the time of Amos he took note
of some quite "respectable" peo
ple who were drinkers. .Church
goers he mentions first of all, peo
ple who drink wine "in the house
of their god." (This of course has
nothing whatsoever to do with the
communion service, a sacrament
instituted by Christ.) He condemns
these church-goers more than he
does the riff-rafi. It is worse for
some people to drink than it is for
others; and perhaps worst of all
for church people. After all is said
and done, people who know little
and may care less about what it
right and what is wrong, will think
that anything a church member
does must be all right. One church
member who is known to drink,
even if he is very temperate about
it, can do more harm than a dozen
alcoholics. Another respectable
class Amos mentions are the wom
en of wealth and social position.
Amos is not exactly respectful1 to
these ladies; on the contrary he
calls them cattle, "kine of Ba
shan" a specially fat kind of
cattle of these ; days. Again, the
use of liquor by wives of success
ful men, women who are leaders
in their communities, does more
harm than all the drinking down
in the poolrooms. The harm done
to Others by the drinker is often
greater than what he does to him-

By REV. C. HERMAN TRUEBLOOD
Te'xT: "I was glad when they said unto me, let us go Into the House
of the Lord." Psalms 112:1.
Surely we should be grateful that we do not have to live In some
benighted land of heathen darkness, or behind some abominable "Iron
Curtain" of brutal, God-denying Communism. The Psalmist delighted in
attending "The House of The Lord;" said he: "Lord, I have loved the
habitation of thy house, and the place where thine dwelleth." Ps. 26.8.
Throughout the ages, - hundreds of -thousands, aye, millions of sincere
souls have found their chief delights, comforts, inspirations, and fellow
ships, in the temple of God.
The church was born out of divine wisdom. Christ, our Saviour and
Lord, Knew that all people needed a sacred and holy place for divine
worship, and for the spiritual enlightenment and development of those
ofkindred minds. The church is the place of holy memories, sacred ex
periences,, superlative friendships, unfailing helpfulness,, and enduring
divine promise: "I will build MY CHURCH, and the gates of hell shall
not prevail against it." Matt. 16:18. In the view of the supreme importance
of the church can you declare with Joshua: ' As for me and my house,
we will serve the Lord?" Josh. 24:15. Can any one really serve the Lord,
in the truest sense of that word, who habitably ignores or neglects the
church? If it came to a matter of either retaining, or abolishing, our
churches, how would you vote? As a matter of fact every one of us is
voting every day and every Sunday, by our SUPPORT or NEGLECT,
either to preserve, or destroy the ehurch. In the words of another we
quote the following reasons "Why We Should Attend Churchi
BECAUSE The enduring things of life, faith, hope and love are
stressed there.
BECAUSE The routine of life is opened to the entrance of finer
and higher things. v
BECAUSE We are God-hungry tyr creation and we may find Him
in sanctuary. ,
BECAUSE Public worsnip sincerely engaged in helps us to draw
nearer to God.
BECAUSE The sins, sorrows, cares, and responsibilities of our daily
lives can be more readily dealt with.' .
BECAUSE The church Is the mightiest agency on earth for the
realization of human progress - the ally of all true reforms.
BECAUSE It is the supreme character making institution in the
world. v
, BECAUSE It relates mankind to God and to one another in happy
and useful fellowship.
: BECAUSE Jesus Christ, the Saviour of all who believe, not only
founded the church, but set the example of public worship bv attending
the synagogue of His day: "As his custom was, he went into the synagogue

Composer is grateful for his good fortune, :
SU dollars and 25 cents That's what a Cleve
land tousle dealer offered the youthful composer
for each of tour songs. Such material, be said,
could be bad In abundance at no charge But Will
Thompson thought differently, especially of his "My
Home on the Old Ohio," and "Gathering Shells from
the Seashore " So be rolled up his manuscripts and
went back home to East Liverpool
In New York, on a business trip for bis merchant
father, the youth carried his songs to a Job printer '
He would have them run off and see to' the sales
himself. No sooner had "Gathering Shells from the
Seashore" bit the stands than the printer had to
' hire extra help The presses ran night and day for
months. Will Lfemartine Thompson became known
as both The Bard of Ohio" and "The Millionaire
Song Writer"
Those who knew him say that Will Thompson's
gift for writing music and poetry was matched with
"a fine character of sincerity, simplicity and right
eousness." At any rate, Will Thompson felt that he
ow,ed something to the good Lord for his good for
tune. He turned his talents to writing sacred songs.
With money earned from his secular music, he
set up his own firm for publishing song books. His
sacred quartets alone sold two million copies and
his gospel songs circled the globe.

The emphases upon brotherhood,

in the Epistle of the Apostle Paul

"So we, being many, are' one body
