In fact, t is doubtful that any other short verse of ten words in the entire Bible contains so much wholesome advice for correct living and victorious spiritual at tainment. We are often nauseated, and freau"ntly horrified, by news paper reports concerning the bitterness, malice, spite, and devilish hatred, almost daily resulting in brutality, stabbings, shootings, and death. It would seem that Iarre number of Deop'e, internationaliv. nationally, in laree citife. small towns, and even in sparcely settled Tural areas, are going around with guns, knives, or bombs, with the purpose in mind of "knockine somebody's boaH "ff, cutting some one's heart out, or shooting the life eut of somebody." The amount of unforgiveness, bitter emnity, and hellish hate abroad in the world today is simply appalling; and the most tragic fact in connection with this monstrous spirit of hate the thing that makes angels weep and devils laugh with hellish glee is the "Devilish, un christian spirit of uniorgiveness and malice," that possesses and ap parently directs the activities of some members of churches people claiming to love God and His righteous Cause. "If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar; for that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?" 1 John 4:20. We are not to "overcome evil by retaliation, by re turning evil for evil, but we are to win the victory by "overcoming evil with good." Nursing a grouch, or carryifrg a "Chip on our shoulder", is "playing into the hands of the devil;" spending our time, thought, and energy, in trying to "get even with somebody," is nothing more nor less than "taking sides with tne cohorts oi ntn." The way to dispell darkness is to turn on light; the way to destroy false is to magnify the truth; the way to manifest Common Sense (as Wtji as good religion) is to "Abhor mat which is evil, cleave to that which is good;" the way to OVERCOME EVIL is by DOING GOOD." Christian Viewpoint Prepared by Department Of Bible Presbyterian Junior College Prepared by Department of Bible Presbyterian Junior College Max ton, N. C. What do our foreign students think of our American. Christianity? They are coming to the United States to study in great numbers. The past' week letters have come from two Koreans, one Chinese 'v-mosan). a Cuban, and six Co lombians about attending college, we already have on the campus foreign students from three nations. Will they find in our expression and living of the Christian faith that which will lead them to know the Way? They must see something of truth, beauty, and love in us. It is not enough only to teach them dog matic doctrines. I was talking re cently with a student in the United States seven months from a Mo hammedan country. He had just changed schools. He- is a Christian reared in a Moslem land. There, all Christians are drawn together into fellowship and brotherliness. When he came to America he chose a col lege which advertised itself as be ing a Bible-believing, orthodox, FOR SEPT. 12' Bible Comment: ' iThe Gospel Can Be a ( iWay of Life s 3 s- clintAbonner . r 1 Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah What Isaac Watts was to England, WiUidm Williams was to Wales r I THE WELSH ARE singing people. They sing of great events, of heroes in battle, of rolling hills and the seas that beat on their native shore. And, as far back as the sixth century, the Welsh have sung hymns. William Williams was educated for a career in medicine but changed his course to the ministry. He was an ordained deacon in the Church of England at 23 and probably would have become a clergyman in the Established Church had he not been warned against the' preachings of such "fanatical dissenters" as. John Wesley, George Whltefleld and Howell Harris' who preached In barns, cow pastures and on street corners. Such warning was bad psychology for an In quisitive mind like that of William Williams. He straightway sought out Howell Harris, found hhn preaching from a grave slab in a cemetery while worshipers filed out of their regular church serv ice to hear his message. Williams Joined a branch of the dissenters who called themselves "Calvinistic Methodists." In 43 years he traveled 85,500 miles: delivering sermons to crowds that numbered 10,--000 and more. Once he preached to a congrega tion of. 80,000 and noted In his journal, "God: strengthened me to speak so loud that most could hear." He was bronzed by the sun, soaked I by rain, chilled by snow and beaten by mobs,. but only death stopped his tongue In 179L I IN ENGLAND THE PEOPLE sang hymn of' . Isaac Watts . . . later those of Charles Wesley- . John Newton and William Cowper. But the song- . loving Welsh people bad comparatively few- f hymns In their native language. So, what Isaac ' Watts was to England, William Williams became- ' to Wales. He wrote 800 hymns just for his eoun- . trymen. Of course, none of us ever is able to fully to live up to our ideals, so what we record is not meant as criticism. Rather it is written in the hope it may help us all be better Christians. This young man said there was too much religion there! Of course, I think the trouble really was there was not enough peace, ana gentleness, and gladness of real Christianity. What rriHE nature of a man's i l daiU life is not determined by ac cident or chance, or by the cir cumstances and happenings of the day, unless one's character be so weak as to be subject to every passing mood or influence. It is true that some annoying ; incident pf the day may lead tc i outbursts of ill-temper, or arouse ; feelings of hatred, envy or jeai , ousy. But what one does, in the I long run, if life has any real worth, is determined by what one is. Character lies back of every thought and deed. It was thus that Jesus stated it again and again, thus fulfilling the re ligion of the Old Testament saints and prophets, which He said He had not come to destroy but to fulfill. In the Gospel there is the word of life, the revelation of God's love and grace; the giti of God, which is eternal life. In the Gospel there are thr words of guidance for living, scl forth in the teachings even as in the examples set by. the Master. In the Gospel there is the in spiration and incentive in the promise of power, the inflowing of a divine help that uplifts: anc. strengthens human wcaknessj the experience that St. Paul meant when he said, "My strength is made perfect in weakness." To know the Gospel, to live from day to day in the records of what Jesus said and did, is to discover the Gospel in all its ;-e,ility a'ld power.
