Should Parents Sit Up
Till Youth Comes Home?
f
By GARRY CLEVELAND MYERS, Ph.D.
SHOULD you stay up till your
teen-age son or daughter comes
In at night? When this child
comes home should you question
and cross-question him or her?
If you do stay up, what is your
purpose? Do you want to ascer
tain the time the child comef In?
Do you assume you could not get
this Information otherwise?
Is your chief reason to find out
If the youth has done something
of which you would not approve?
Do you suppose that questioning
guarantees getting all the facts?
If you did not approve of the ac
tivities related by your child,
what could you do abou it?
One mother wrott the follow
ing letter about such problems:
"Dear Dr. Myers: I trust my
children, especially my oldest
child, 15, though he doesn't have
much to say when he returns
home.
Straight to Bed
"If I am up when hf comes
home, usually by midnight at the
latest, sometimes he'll talk,
sometimes he'll go straight to
bed. if I'm up I will ask him If he
has naa a good time.
"Do you t."ak I should stay up
and then ask him a lot of ques
tions? F.e has sp.id, 'Mom. 1 know
you trust me ts.epp un uiuuuk

As 1 told this mother, you are
v : p mi to make a point of stay
1:... up ana waiting for your son
to'corne home Even so, your son,
judging from his remarks about
your trusting him. may feel that
you ask some prying questions
when you do stay up
It's wise to wait until the next

Sleep and Scdety
You probably have an under
standing about the time he is to
be in the house at night. He needs
a certain amount of sleep and
safety must be .ousidered, too.
Whether he drives or rides with
others, traffic near or after mid
night Is usually more hazardous
than earlier. .
When you observe Incidents
that prove his dependability In
various situations, be generous
with your approvals. ;
At companionable times, you
or Dad might briefly express your
wishes about what be should or
shouldn't do while away from
home. Anticipate some of the
temptations he may face. Be
careful not to make your sugges
tions sound like commands. It
might be wise and prudent to ex
press such wishes just as he is
about ready to go out for the eve
ning or on a date.
Family Conversations
Such good suggestions can be
most effective if you enjoy com
panionship with the boy, and he
is able to carry on easy conversa
tion with the family.
These same principles aiply to
any daughter and her parJnts.
Let us aim to guide our chil

on their own accord, strive to do

Flower Show On Wednesday : ;
All Home Gardeners have, breath.
ed a sigh of relief now, that their
oractlce flower show Is over, but
are more confident to do bigger
things with flowers. Before this
show, from everywhere I heard "
just can't make an arrangement'
or "I Just dread making an arrange
ment!" and so more of us really
know what to expect But when I
walked into the Fireside Room of
the Methodist Church on Wednes
day afternoon and saw such a love
ly array of flowers, well arranged,
nice blue, red and .yellow ribbons
attached, I was naturally shocked,
but very proud of our club. For
surely one can hardly imagine see
ing so many lovely flowers in one
room. Among oiners wno neipea to
inlance this room other than mep
bers of the club were Mrs. Sterling
Marriner who made a beautiful ar
rangement in a pumpkin on the
mantle and Mrs. M. A. Smith who
planned and beautifully carried out
breakfast table setting.
Committees which made it possi
ble for us to have our show were:
Mrs. John A. Johnson and Mrs. Bill
Sheffield, set up committee. Mrs.
John Vincent and Mrs. Morris Jor
dan, clean up committee and Mrs.
O. S. Matthews, Mrs. Bill Taylor,
Mrs. Earl Huie and Mrs. Charles
Sheffield who were in charge of en
tries, classification and served as
clerks and most important of all
to our show were our judges, Mrs.
E P. Ewers and Mrs. E. C. Thomp
son to whom we are very grateful
for their help in judging our ar
rangements. Blue ribbon winners were: Mes-
