' 11-25-et-HEP ' ' ADMINISTRATRIX NOTICE i TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS - Pedestrian traffic accidents which claimed 244 Tar Heels last year represents one of the traffic safe- ty engineer's biggest headaches. City after city, follow ine careful study of the traffic picture, has turned its gunS first on pedestrian accidents, wiry.' because tne average urban area finds that pedestrian deaths make up a large percent of its total traffic fatalities. Y Pedestrian fatalities, when studied closely, tend to . folldv a rattern that highlights danger to two age groui-S tne very young ana me uiu. ' The techniques of protecting children are adequate ly handled through parental teaching, the public schools and safety patrols. This particular editorial is aimed at those living i in the age of danger the elderly pedestrian. r, From local studies made- of the pedestrian accident picture, the following facts emerge: . : 1. The elderly pedestrian consistenly appears most often as a traffic fatality, with some area? finding as high a ratio as two out three pedestrians killed aged 50 or older. . " ' 2. Pedestrian casualties usually come from the ranks of non-drivers . . . those who do not understand the mechanics or limitations of driving a car. 3. The victim is most apt to be male. 4. More pedestrians are killed during the hours of dusk and darkness than during the hours of daylight, even though exposure (amount of traffic on the roads and number of pedestrians out-of-doors) decreases con siderably after sundown. In summing up, the pedestrian in the greatest danger is the elderly man who has never driven a car, and his dangerous walking hours are those in dusk or darkness. In this community we can find out what special hazards old folks face. We can eliminate these dangers where possible and we can warn the oldsters to protect themselves against the others. When we cut down on our elderly pedestrian fatalities we will have solved a major portion of our entire pedestrian problem.
