The Board of Directors and hos pital officials feel they are ex tremely fortunate to obtain the Jervices of Dr. Parrott for this im portant position. He has an outstanding record for a 40-year-old doctor which had its beginning when he was a junior at JJorth Carolina State where he was studying aeronautical engineering. His father, Dr. Albert Parrott of Kinston, persuaded him to give tip his ideas for becoming an en gineer, transfer to the University of North Carolina and study medi cine. " After completing his pre-med course at UNC, he enrolled at Tem ple Medical School where he grad uated in 1940. One year of his in ternship was spent at City Hospit al, Winston-Salem, and the second year was in Kinston under Dr. Mer cer Parrott. He was associate in surgery there for one and a half years before entering the United States Navy from 1942-46. Two and a half years of his ser vice was spent in the Pacific The ter of operation. He was discharged as Lt. Commander in the U. S. Navy. Dr. Parrott returned to Kinston to continue his work but took time out to re-enter Temple University where he took an eight weeks post graduate course. After the short course, he re turned to Parrott Hospital in Kins ton, where he remained for four years as Associate in Surgery. In January, 1951, he went to New Orleans where he worked and stud ied under the renowned Dr. Alton Ochsner, professor of Surgery at Tulane University. He studied un der Dr. Ochsner for 15 months. During his stay, he was licensed to practice medicine and surgery in Louisiana. He then was employed at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, and was Chief Resident in Surgery. He remained in the capacity for 15 months. It was during this time that he be came acquainted with I. O. "Jim" Wilkerson, who is the administra tor of Duplin General Hospital. He returned in July, 1953, to the Surgical Staff of Lenoir Memorial Hospital where he remained until taking the position of Chief Sur geon at the Duplin General Hospital. It is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it, if the expert advice of many doctors and insur ance; agencies.' Health Insurance is almost a "must" in' the farm family budget if we are to meet the' medical Tieeds of our people, ar sighted Individuals have seen the keen need of bringing better medical service closer to the people of Duplin County and it will be necessary for all families to make some type of an arrangement to avail themselves of this new medical facility, our General Hospital.- Few people realize that the average family pays about $120.00 annually for medical service, and this falls far short of filling medical needs. As compared with standards of rea sonably good medical care,' the farm people of Duplin are using less than half of the doctor and hospital service that they need, less than a third of the needed dental and eye ser vice and less than a tenth of needed health insurance. The percentage of uncorrected physical defects among rural school children is high. The rural people of Duplin County Should need no crystal ball to foresee the imperativeness of "con tacting a reputable insurance company now to secure the ne cessary coverage for their families. Reputable is a word that bears close scrutiny in choosing an insurance company to deal with. Certain companies are under close observation in North Carolina for unscrupulous cancellation of policies when they are needed most. Guidance in selecting companies can be se cured through offices of the Duplin County Farm Bureau, doctors, Health Department or agriculture leaders in the county. In cases of stringency and monthly or quarterly premiums are difficult, arrangements could possibly be worked out whereby health insurance could be carried along with oper ating expense by the landlord and be paid in the fall. Think, farm family, think! . . . Think of the life saving, pain relieving that our new modern hospital will offer to our loved ones if we are prepared to accept them. Health Insur ance is the answer.
