The deduction for depre ciation on Schedule J Form 1040 Is allowed only for property used In farming. SPIRITUAL SOUNDNESS BY REV. C, HERMAN TRUEBLOOD TEXT: "Let my heart be sound in thv statutes, that I fie nnt Asham ed." Ps. 119:80. Soundness is a word that applies to many phases of life; for instance, when we speak of something that is sound, we think of things that are In "good shape," free from damage, defect, disease or de cay. Things that are sound, especially persons, are strong, good, reliable, correct, truthful,' and honest There is a crying need for soundness of purpose, soundness of motive, soundness of character in all dealings with our fel!ow-man. SPIRITUAL SOUNDNESS is a timely torjic. and should be a thoueht- provoking challenge to every sincere Christian. There are a number of Scriptural examples of, and injunctions to SPIRITUAL SOUNDNESS; let us observe a few of them: 1. SOUNDNESS OF HEART. The my heart be sound in thy statutes." 'A sound heart is the life of the flesh: A sound heart is essential, both in a physical and a spiritual sense to good health physically and spiritually. , 2. SOUNDNESS OF MIND: "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." 2 Tim. 1:7 A Christian should seek the mind of Christ "For to be carnally minded is aeam; Dut to De spiritually minded is, Hie and peace." Rom. 8:6. 3. SOUNDNESS OF SPEECH. .. Paul. In writinc to Titus. urees him to "Shew himself a pattern of good works shewing uncorruptness, grav ity, sincerity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned." Titus 2:7-8. Unbridled tongues are used by vain persons." James 1:10 4. SOUNDNESS OF DOCTRINE. today than ever before, and many of Scriptural Doctrine. 'Tor the time will sound doctrine; but after their own ers naving ltcwng ears." Sound doctrine is essential to sound living. 5 SOUNDNESS OF FAITH. In again stresses the importance of things that are sound in The Christian attitude and conduct He urges that he be Sound In faith, In love, and in patience." Titus 2:2, 6. SOUNDNESS OF WISDOM uished from the wisdom of the "worldly wise." ,"My son, let not them uepan irom tnine eyes; Keep sound wisdoms ana discretion." Prov. 3:21. "Be not wise in thine own eyes." Prov. 3:8. "The fear of the Lor is the beginning of wisdom." "Ye are wise in Christ." 1 Cor. 4:10. CALYPSO Pastor 2nd and 4th Sundays MAGNOLIA BAPTIST CHURCH Bev. J. 0. 'Good-night boy' "Say your 'prayers?" "Saying them when you said good night' For a minute the room was in stillness and then the boy asked. Whatch pray for. Uncle Jesse? Them Roebuckers?' (Uncle Jesse had lost his teeth and wanted very much to save up the money to order a pair of false teeth from a mall . order house so he would eat roasting ears and hickory nuts agairi. He called the teeth "them Roebuckers.") .'Mostly.' The old man didn't want to tell him, ' I pray for you.' It was not the thing to tell a boy. 'Reckon I pray for a shotgun I might get it?' Tjlount'n.' 'Then reckon I pray that I catch that thing out in the swamp I might catch it?' 'Mount'n.' 'Do I pray for both what about that?' 'Too much praying. That's how come folks get theirselves in a mess. Don't never crowd the Lord, boy.' In a passage in "Good-bye, My Lady", James Street, who died in Chapel Hill recently, has the above conversation between Uncle Jesse and the little nephew whom he was rearing In his swamp cabin. Uncle Jesse's faith, humility, and content ment to ask the Lord a few bless ings, are touching. ' However, that theology of prayer is wrong. God wants us to ask Him for His best gifts. "Or what man is there of you, who, if his son shall ask him for a loaf, will give him a stone; or if he shall ask for a fish, will give him a serpent? If ( ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, bow much more shall your Father who is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?" (Matt. 7:9-10) God stands ready and wishing that we should ask, for only when we desire His good gifts are we ready to receive them. The tragic fact about most of us is that we ask God for so few of His best gifts, which are His spiritual gifts, such as more faith, courage, bright er hope, greater love. Some of us think our greatest needs are shot guns, "Roebuckers", other things, or money, but our greatest need is for the things which God, in His love and wisdom, is yearning to give us. Our greatest need is to be better men and women. God wants us to "covet earnestly the best gifts." Je sus said, "Ask, and it shall be giv en you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: for every one that asketh re ceiveth; and he that seeketh find eth, and to him that knocketh it shall be opened." (Matthew 7: 7-8.) Gl Home Loan Applications Drop Drop Below 50,000 GI home loan applications dropped below the 50,000 mark during De cember for the first time in 17 months, Veterans Administration announced. - VA said the 45,514 applications for guaranty received in the last month of 1955 was 0,660 less than the November total, a seasonal decline. The December total was 13 per cent below December, 1954 but 91 per cent above December, 1953, per cent above 1952 and 47 per cent above 1951. VA also reported it received ap praisal applications for 43,457 pro posed and existing homes during December, compared with 53,416 for the previous month. Of the De cember total, 24,892 were for pro posed homes, compared with 30, 397 for November, and 18,565 were for existing homes, compared with 23,019 for November. VA said the December decline in proposed homes is attributed to both seasonal factors and to the tightened market for GI home mort gages. The drop in number of existing homes for which VA received ap praisal requests was seasonal a bout the same percentage decrease as recorded from November to De cember in previous years. Q. My daughter is receiving VA compensation payments, based on the death of my husband, a World War I veteran. She is over 18 years old, but she is attending school. The payments will be contin ued during vacations, so long as evi dence is submitted to VA snowing that she was attending school at the end of one term, and plans to re sume her studies at the next regu lar term.
