WRTHEff Young people of high school and college age are making a valuable contribution In volunteer service at some 78 Veterans ::' Administration hospitals, VA announced. , The cheer and enthusiasm of the young volunteers and the services they perform are of great assistance to patients and members of the hospital staffs, a study Just complet ed by a special subcommittee of the VA Voluntary Service shows. In return, the young people gain satisfaction from fulfilling their re sponsibility for community service and often develop Interest in car eers in medicine and hospital work the subcommittee said. The hundreds of services per formed by young volunteers at VA hospitals Include- delivering books and flowers to wards, acting as hostesses and receptionists, pushing wheelchaiar patients, and reading, shopping and writing for patients. Those with special skills shelve ind catalog library books,' assist in laboratories and - blood banks, help with production f newspapers, and work as disc jockeys for hospital radio programs. VA said in assigning young voluiv teers to activities involving direct contact with patients careful con sideration is given to 'disabilities of patients involved and the degree of supervision that can be given by the hospital staff. The subcommittee making the study was composed of representa tives from the American National Red Cross, the Young Women's Christian Association, the Nation al Catholic Community Service, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Sal' vatlon Army, and the VA Depart ment of Medicine and Surgery. Soehackl said VA originally es timated that of all the 114,000 widows receiving compensation for the service - connected deaths of their husbands before January 1, 1957, approximately 104,000 were qualified to receive the higher payments.
