It Is pointed out that the Tar Heel state ranks near the top among states inN hospital and health center construction during the period since 1947, with some 5000 new hospital beds being added in 62 counties through the faculties of the Medi cal Care Commission, '"H "f "This construction program, how ever; is but one of, the health and medical care Improvements made possible by the , intensive educa tional, legislative, and cooperative actions by' and for the people of North Carolina during the past ten years." Among the programs tobe re viewed at this 10th Anniversary Ru ral Health Conference will be the recommendations of the Poe Com mission which was appointed by the late Governor BrollgKtoft in 195; In order to improve health conditions in North Carolina, the Poe Convnis sion stressed the need for 1. more hospital beds 2. more physicians and 3. more people covered by pre paid voluntary health insurance. The theme of this year's Rural Health Conference will be 'Looking Both Ways,' a review of where the program started in 1B46 and an es timate of what's ahead between now and 1966. In the words of Dr. Hugh A. Mat thews of Canton, Chairman of the Medical Society's sponsoring com mittee, "We cannot , say the job is completed. We have more to do to gether for better health, ' medical care, prevention of disease and dis ability., Our present trend towards increased population and the great er demand , for more , and, , better medical services, all point to the need for continued efforts on the part of all persons in meeting the needs of today and tomorrow.' , , Also on the October 2nd program will be an illustrated talk by Dr. W. Wyan Washburn of Boiling Springs entitled 'Modern Medicine from the Doctor's Black Bag.',, He will be assisted by Mrs. Rosanne Green,' a ! nurse from Rex Hospi tal in Raleigh and Miss Frances Alexander, Assistant Editor of the Progressive Farmer, also of Ra leigh. The afternoon portion of the day long conference will be divided into two parts, an address by Mrs. Char les Sewell of Otterbein, Indiana, Na tional Farm Bureau Women's Lead er, on -The Forward Look' followed by a reactor panel on 'Goals and Objectives for a Total Community Health Program.' The panel will be moderated by Dr. Matthews, with other members 'including Robert J. Putnam of Asheville representing industry; E. Y. Floyd of Raleigh for Farm organizations- Charles Phillips of Greensboro for Educa tion; and Rev. Donald G. Myers of Reidsville for religious groups. Edwin Gill, State Treasurer, a man who is familiar with the ac tions and views of four past gover nors towards the needs for health improvements, will give the re sponse to the morning session. Scouting has an almost universal appeal to boys, and the program it provides is designed to aid and supplement the: teaching of the church, the) hornet and the scnool. Many court judges have proclaimed Scouting as a principle aid in reducing juvenile delinquency. It is a program that thrives in the out of doors. It teach es skills which will help a boy in later life, no matter what profession or occupation he may follow. Scout ing developes leadership qualities in a boy. It teaches hiin to love his country and to value the Democratic way of life. Scouting is widespread through out Duplin County. Aibertson, Fai son, Kenansville, Calypso, Warsaw, Rose Hill, Wallaee and Beulaville have the program for their white hnvs The same communities, plus r.hnrltv ChinauaDin and Magnolia provide the program for the col ored boys. There are 10 Cub Packs in the countv which rrovide a pro gram for the 8-9-10 vear old boys. 202 boys in this age group are en Invins Scoutini There are 19 Boy Scout Troops in the County which accomodate 421 boys of the 11 to 13 aae si-ouD. There are also 6 Ex plorer Posts in the county with 131 young men aged 14 to 18 enrolled.
