Collect North Carolina, long noted for its progressive roadibuildlng pro gram has just nabbed an addition al honor. ' The State Highway Commission has been notified It- has earned the "Award of Honor" from the Na tional Safety Council for its em ployee safety record during 1,58. The Award of Honor" is the highest citation given by the Saf ety Council and North Carolina's Highway Commission is one of only six similar State agencies to have ever received it. The 1058 award went to only two States' North Carolina and Texas. During 1958, the 15,982 perman ent employees and prison laborers cnaixea up more than 39 million man hours with an accident fre quency record of only 6.49 accid ent per million man hours worked. North Carolina's record was some 6 below the national average of 15.04 accidents per million hours, tabulated from other re porting Highway Commissions. The 1958 award is of soecial significance since it came during the greatest highway construction program in North Carolina history. The giant Interstate Program was in full swing duing the year with North Carolina standing near the lop in the progress of Interstate construction. Notice of the award was sent to H. D. "Tarvla" Jones,' Safety Of ficer for the State Hlgrway Com mission, in charge of the employee safety program. Jones said arrang ements for presentation of the "Award of Honor" plaque have not been completed, but the pre. sentation will probably be made to Governor Hodges during the month of June. For several years the Highway Commission has maintained a sat ety trailing program for its em ployees. Established in 1947, the Commission now has over 800 persons qualified in First Aid, along with 400 First Aid Initruc- tora and 566 Advanced First -Aid Students . . .. : First Aid equipment is now In stalled In mor than 100 Highway Commission vehicles to form the largest such mobile service of any Highway Department In the Na tion. All of these mobile units are available to the general public and are. frequently used In highway accidents and related mishaps. - ., Airman Charles C. Grady , , ' Airman Charles 'C.
