There has ceen an approximate North Carolina Poultrymen Face Keen Competition From Vofimotpa indicate that in 1958 North Carolina produced 10 peif cent more eggs than she needed. This means that some Tar Heel egg producers had to look out side the state for markets. There is competition for" these out-of-state markets, however; competition that North Carolina poultrymen must meet to stay in business. North Carolina's main egg com petition comes from Iowa, Min nesota, theDakotas, Nebraska, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Georgia. The competition is lor markets in- the Northeast and along the Atlantic Seaboard, as far south as Florida. To help Tar Heel -producers understand their competitors, A. P. Stemberger and Clayton P. Libeau of N. C. State College studied egg operations . in other states. Here are some things they fo und: (1) Greater concentration of hens per square mile, accompli shed with largef flocks or more farm flocks than in North Caro lina. This cuts assembly costs since it involves fewer stops and shorter hauls in obtaining loads. It gives areas such as Pennsyl vania and New Jersey an advan tage in assembly costs of one or two cents per dozen below most North Carolina communities. (2) A majority of egg produ cers practicing quality coniroi programs. Such farms produce eggs, and oil. spray and refrige rate them in mechanical coolers to retain original quality. In con trast, oil spraying of eggs is almost unknown in North Caro lina and most producers do not nave mecnamcui reirigeiaiiuu despite the high temperatures en countered for half the year. (3) Marketing agencies sel ling 6,00 or more cases of eggs per week. Such large volumes make possible the use of the la test technology which, though in volving high investment . costs, enables other areas to reduce egg processing costs by about one cent per dozen as compared with costs obtained by use of techno logy currently in use in North Carolina. Current . volume in North Carolina does not justify the use of such technology,, how ever., ' 1 . (4rj Higher output per hen. than in' North Carolina. Rate of lay per hen is higher in all major supply areas' competing with No rth Carolina. Production Is as much as two-dozen eggs per hen higher in some states. This gives uniform volume the year around and, consequently lower proces- Pridgen Plumbing Co. f 3"; ; Beote 2y . . . Warsaw. N. C , i STATE LICENSED r ,V CONTRACTOR r V' ,'T. ,?'.. Throughout North Carolina, in terest in hat-making is increasing and many dollars saved through the project are being added to the family "nest-egg," according to Miss Mclver. Out - Of - State Markets sin costs. North Carolina pro ducers still tend to shop around f6r outlets during the year. This places the marketing agency at a disadvantage not only in terms of costs but also in being unable to guarantee customers steady supplies. The latter mayj often result in Jo$s of customers. (6) Flexibility with regard to change on the part of produ cers and pride in their product. Newer production and marketing techniques are .quickly adopted; products are sold in new, clean containers; and competition is welcomed: In a rapidly changing environment, reluctance to cha nge places us at a disadvantage.
