4 - Thomasville Times - Thursday, January 14,2010 FROM PAGE 1 MENTORS From page 1 City Schools Board meet ing. “We’ve got 23 of our fin est student athletes going out to these two schools to mentor children,” Captain said. “I think this says a lot about our school system that so many people are willing to help these children.” The mission of the program, Captain said, is to assist in the devel opment of personal and social skills by provid ing academic support and encouragement to younger students. Men tors are asked to provide positive guidance and be role models by increasing accountability and devel oping relationships with their mentees. “We think it really means a lot that these students have someone else to be accountable to other than home,” said Captain. “We hope to turn some of these young men to the good.” Out of the 23 students athletes, 14 work with at-risk students from TMS with the other nine mentoring children from LDE. Captain said he asked the principals from both schools to find young men who had po tential but needed some guidance. Mentors spend a little more than an hour with their mentees twice a month, dedicating 35 minutes towards academ ics and the rest of the time interacting with the students. “I told our guys to devel op a friendship and a re lationship with the kids,” Captain said. “We’re try ing to get home a simple message and that’s to stay out of trouble. You can’t learn if you’re con stantly in trouble with the teacher. We think it’s important for them to see guys who are not only successful in athletics but to see a different side of them as weU. Our guys are role models in every sense of the word.” Between the 23 men tors, they have a cumula tive grade point average of 3.16 and are aU plan ning on attending col lege. Mentors also fulfill a community service re quirement for college ap plications. Athletes from every sport except soccer are participating in the program. “We were honored to be invited to take part in this program,” said TMS counselor Stephanie Newkirk. “This gives our kids a chance to relate to other kids closer to their own age.” Mentor Steven Stan ley addressed the school board with his mentee, TMS’ Lee Ivey, saying the experience has been a positive one and that he enjoys being in a position to help someone. “He works real hard,” Stevens said of Ivey. “This program has taught me the benefits of being a positive role model in someone’s life.” Also at the meeting: • TCS approved a capital outlaybudgetamendment www.tvilletimes.coiit Infrared Mirade Heater cur YOUR KEATING BiiiS UP TO 50% Heat up to 1000 sq. ft. for Pennies a day I I I 1-877-497-4427 j Must Mention Coupon Code 6566 • Call Now, Supplies Limited I Was ‘Cannot start fires $499 • Safe around kids &pets • Money Back Guarantee Finance Your Garage! 90 Days Ho My Payments&Holoterestlf D" Pole 4fr Bams y I plsSiioiiaJsi comm Buildings economical I Affordable Quality s .r H u c T u fi t: s. i c. l_S77-434-3l33 www.cbstructuresinc.com YOU RIGHTFULLY EARNED IT.
