Day in the Park
High Point Area Arts Council is invit
ing visual artists—^fine arts and craft
persons—^to participate m the 40th an
nual Day in the Park festival scheduled
for Saturday Sept. 18. Five awards in
the amoimt of $100 each wUl be selected
from aU participating artists. Judging
will include only handcrafted items. Ex
hibit booth space is 15 ft. long by 10 ft.
deep. The registration fee is $65. Dead
line for all entries is today.
Held throughout High Point’s City
Lake Park, Day in the Park features live
entertainment. Adventure Island activi
ties for children, a Folk Life area, com
munity friends and food, as well as fine
arts and crafts booths. The one-day fes
tival wUt begin at 11 a.m. and ends at 5
p.m. There is no charge for admission.

Squadron Commander, WC. Leamon,
of ThomasvUle, assisted the Fed
eral Aviation Administrator and the
transportation supervisor from At
lanta m an investigation at the site
of a single-engine plane crash which
kUled two ThomasvUle residents. The
investigation determined the pUot
was making a fly-by at about 60-75 feet
above the air strip and may not have
seen a high tension transmission ca
ble that crossed the center of the air
field diagonaUy. There was no fire,
and Leamon said he believed the two
victims m the plane — passenger and
pUot — were kUled on Impact.
Aug. 30,1998
Robert W. Thompson Sr., business
man and city leader, passed away at
the Piedmont Center. Thompson, 87,
was the last living charter member
of the ThomasvUle Lions Club and
served on city councU from 1977-81,
ThomasvUle YMCA officials named
him “Man of the Year” in 1972, and in
. 1974-75 he earned the same distinction
from the local civitans organization.
