6 -Thomasville Times - Tuesday, November 9,2010 FROM PAGE1 LUMINARY From page 1 asville Fire Department. On Dec. 11, agency staff and volunteers fill the bags with sand and place a candle Inside. Luminar ies are then placed on the gravesltes of donors’ loved ones and lit as dusk falls. Mickey says the event truly Is a commu nity effort. “Agency staff and vol unteers start lighting all the candles around 4 p.m. and the fire department comes out to direct traf fic throughout the park,” Mickey said. “Comer Trucking donates the sand and local Girl and Boy Scout troops help us to fill the bags.” Barringer says the event is both a way to honor family members while giving back to agencies that support the community throughout the year. “My son, Brian, and his family lost their home to fire last year and these agencies came to his aid,” Barringer said. “Each one adopted one of my grandchildren and helped provide Christ mas gifts for them. They bought clothes, bicycles and all kinds of toys for them. The ThomasvUle Firefighter’s Association also gave them a mon etary donation. It was to tally unexpected. “My family ended up having a personal need for these agencies. You never know when it could be you or your family that may need help.” Fairgrove Family Re source Center Director Terri Nelson said she was glad to be a part of the luminary program each year. “All of us feel very priv ileged that they wUl do this so that we can help disadvantaged people in the area; I’m honored to be a part of it,” Nelson said. “Not only does it honor our families, but it also helps support agen cies that assist disadvan taged families that live in ThomasvUle and Eastern Davidson County. “I think the luminar ies are a great way to memorialize our famUy members that we lost. It especiaUy touched me be cause my mother is bur ied there and each year I am able to remember her and put a luminary on her grave.” Those who don’t have a loved one buried at HoUy HUl stUl are able to par ticipate in the program, as those luminaries are used to form a cross at the entrance of the park. “It’s breathtaking,” Nel son said. “It’s an amazing spiritual experience and it can certainly put you in the holiday spirit.” Donations of $3 or more are currently being accepted at the HoUy HUl office, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. FamUies are limited to five luminaries for each grave, but any additional donations wUl be used for candles in other areas of the park. Community volunteers are needed to help fUl and light the lu minaries the day of the program. Snacks and drinks are provided to volunteers. “It’s a lot of candles, so the more volunteers we have, the easier it is,” Nelson said.
