M. The committee gave the building com mittee consent to go ahead with the construction of the new li brary. During the meeting, Mrs. A. O. Whitted, librarian, gave a very encouraging report relative to the number of books circulated for ,the past four months. The office completed 13 years of ad ministration of the old-age and survivors insurance program. 925 individuals were assisted during 1949 in claiming their re tirement or family insurance ben efts. By January, 1950 an estimated 3,000 person in Durham and the surrounding five count'igs. were re cciving -about $45,000 in monthly payments. ** ' 4,000 social security accounts were established' for persons go ing into coveded employment for the first time. 5,500 duplicate social security cards were furnish ed to persons who had changed their names or misplaced their cards, ••• • ■ " . -' J 4,300 inquiries were answered in providing the public information on social security. To inform the public of their rights- - and res ponsibilities- under the old-age and survivors insurance program, 63 talks were made to civic clubs, student bodies, labor arganizat ions, employer groups, employee groups, women’s organizations, ect. 88 radio broadcasts were made in addition to information provided through the newspapers and other publications. — The Durham office serves the Counties of Durham, Orange, Per son, Granville, Chatham, and Lee. During the 1949 regular monthly, visits were made in each of these Counties to serve residents too far away to visit the field office. The Durham office offers the fol lowing services: (1) assists work ers and their families in claiming old-age and survivors insurance benefits; (2)- furnishes social se curity cards; (3) assists persons in checking their social security wage records; (4) furnishes infor mation to the public concerning the social security program. The old-age and survivors in surance program began January 1, 1937. The plan is a method by which wage earners and their em ployers contribute to make ad vance provision for maintaining at least a part of the family’s income lost by termination of work in old age or because of death of the wage earner at any age. .
