Club Week C Being Observed JJiUsboro — For 443 members of 17 county home demonstration clubs this is National Home Dem onstration Week - - a week in which the theme “Today’s Home Builds Tomorrow’s World” will be used in all phases of ch# work and play. The Spring Federation meeting for the county was held yesterday as a part orf file week’s observance. ‘Mrs. Kenneth Cuyler of Durham, a delegate to the International meeting orf Farm Women in Den mark last year, told about her experiences in Europe and showed slides of her trip. Refreshments were served by the Schley and Smith Level Clubs and music was furnished by the County ohoral group. Mrs. Paul Long, county council president, presided. In the organization on the coun ty level there is two white home demonstration agents, Mrs. Kat liryn Hamrick and Miss Vir ginia Cathey, and one Negro home demonstration agent, Mrs. Bonnie Davis. Serving as voluntary lead ers are 80 women trained to hold 62 meetings which were attended by 1,459 persons during tire past year. • ■ •'--h— Members have accomplished work through programs planned by the home demonstration agents and the extension service at State College. The Family Life program reached into homes throughout dm county as the study, “Charac ter and How It Grows” was con ducted in 17 clubs in November. A county music program was begun in 1&50 with the election of Mrs. Charlie Mincey of Schley Club, as county music chairman, i Bach club music chairman co-! operated by following a suggested outline in developing the club and county program. ^ . Frank A; Daniels, .chairman of the State Board of Welfare, in an nouncing the appointment of the entire list for the State said that the State Board, in appointing the new members, had searched for “civic-minded, socially-conscious citizens” who were willing ac cept the increasing responsibility being carried toy county welfare boards under the state’s plan for a locally-adminiatered public wel fare program. “We believe that every one of the persons we have appointed to these boards is an excellent choice,” he emphasized. "We took into account the rec ommendations df private citizens, county and city officials, and state legislators, and each ,person rec ommended was carefully con sidered. We are sure that the state’s welfare program, at the local level, will be in good hands and that every effort will be made to prbVide effteient wiHfare ser vices directed toward meeting carefully, investigated' need and toward helping people to help themselves. A sec ond member of each county board is named by the county commis sioners, and the thkd member is namedbythe first two appointees. No board member can serve more than two consecutive terms., o AAUW To Sponsor Benefit Card Party For Grant Fund Chapel Hill — The Chapel Hill Branch of the American Associa tion of University Women is spon soring a Benefit Bridge-Canasta party which will conclude with a Fashion Show-Tea by Robbins of Chapel Hill on May 5th at the Monogram Club. The purpose of the party is to begin to rai.se funds for a Named International Grant which the branch has decided to establish in honor of the late Mrs. N. B. Orange 4-H Club Takes Tap Honors At Fat Stock Show For the third year in succes sion Orange County dub members have taken top honors in the swine division at the Fat Stock Show in Durham. The honor this year went to Oliver Roberts of the Hillsboro 4-H Club'who exhibited a Spotted Poland China barrow. The reserve champion went to Carl Walters, of Aycock Club, who also exhibited a Spotted Poland China banre/w. This is the third year that Carl Walters has won second place honors in the show. Young Rob erts received 80c iper lb. for his 215 lb. borrow. The animal was bought by the Piedmont Packing Company of Hillsboro. As an ad ditional ffted. the Orange Cobnty SPC Breeders Association will award him a young gilt. PiedmoYvt Packing Company ^also bought the Reserve Champion belonging Jo Carl Walters at 36c per. lb. Of the 46 hogs hi the show. Orange County Club members exhibited 37. Twenty-five of these were a warded blue rifibons, II red rib bon s, and 1 white ribbon. A very high compliment was given by the pudge, Dr. H. A. Stewart, of State College, who said that this group of. top hogs would compare very favorably with groups of top hogs exhibited at the International Livestock Exhibition at Chicago. Four-H and FFA members ex hibiting fat hogs were as follows: Barney JPitAman, Oliver Roberts, fiat Martin. Jerrv Garrard, Jack Holloway, Mildred Ferrell,Carl Walters, Van Kenion, Frank Mill er, Henry Morris, Betty and Rose Walters, Jimmy Dunn, Troy Thompson, and Thomas Teer. The average price for al hogs was $23. 10 per 100 lbs. (Including . the grand and reserve champions) In the swine breeding division of the show, the Orange County exhibit was sponsored by the Orange County SPC Breeders As sociation. Nineteen animals were entered by the local 4-H and adult breeders in this event. In the Junior guilt class, Jimmy Dunn, Hillsboro 4-H .Ck1!). member, had the grand champion, with R. F. j Poythress, Route 3, Chapel Hill, 1 exhibiting the reserve chaniioion. In the senior gilt class, R. L. Moh Icr of Hillsboro was awarded tisst place. This rnw and her pigs were inchWcd on a float ex hibited by the Hillsboro 4-H Club and was in the iparade. Change County 4-tH and FFA CTiib members - exhibited 15 Fat Steers in the show. Ten of these graded prime and choiel aW7wcre awarede blue ribbons, 4 were graded good and awarded red rib bons, with 2 graded commercial and given white ribbons. This was the largest group of steers entered by any af the counties. The grand champion was exhibited by Joe Lindiey of Alamance County with the reserve champion being shown by 'Douglas" Dean Dounty. Orange County 4ron third and fourth place in the show on exhibits by Barney and Philip Pittman, Hillsboro V-H Club fhern bers. The 080 lb. grand champion brough t' $1.00 -per lb-, -with the. entire.sale (including the tfrand champion) averaging $40.16 per; 100 lbs.
