Comity Departments Prepare Rabies Control Program Now is the time to.prepare for ( mad dogs and “the risk of rabies from their bites, I>r. O. David Garvin, district health officer said this week. _* The belief that the hot summer dog days have any connection with madA dogs is just a super stition. Rabies runs the year round, but there is a chance it will increase in the late winter and spring. Orange County .has had five definite rabid laboratory (proved cases of rabies in. dogs during the ’ast fourteen months. These are the cases known to the Health Department and do npt include dogs with suspicious signs 'and symptoms destroyed without test an report. In Most areas, the public is in different until a rabies scare strikes near home. Often the cleanups after such a scare do not include all areas within the coun ty. Last year one person had ra bies and died here in the State of North Carolina. Fortunately for us in Orange County, no case of rabies occurred .in humans. There is no guarantee -that they will not occur. Getting rabies is more alarming than you think, because it does not necessarily strike you down quickly. Many < months afterward when you have forgotten that you were bitten, rabies can come on and kill. The ■ site and severity of the wound influences the length of time of incubation and the effect of the rabies vaccine. In the' entire United States be tween January 1 and February i 23;»there were reported 1,327 lab oratory proved cases of rabies in animals. A rabid dog does not respect j<rity or countyV boundary lines and so long as therhhs one rabid dog in the state, there will Caldwell Home demonstration Club Organized By Mrs. (Elizabeth Murray A group of interested persons met tedt Monday afternoon, at 2:30 in tihe hyne cf Mis. John HiLey, for the purpose cf organiz ing a Caldwell Home Demonstra tion Club. Mrs. Kathryn Ham rick, and Miss Dot Parrish, Coun ty Home Demonstration Agents, called the meeting to order and presided during the business ses sion. Throiiigh the enthusiastic co operation of those present, many pertinent administrative and exe cutive details were settled upon. A nominating committee was ap pointed to securp a (president, vice president,’ secretary and club yearbook was filled in by project leaders and1 hostesses for each of the remaining months volunteering. At the conclusion of the bus ;nes. period*, the hostess served a beverage, chicken salad sand oe constant danger tp other areas.
