S. Senator Al ton A. Lennon at the University of North Carolina next Wednes day night will be one of his prin cipal speeches in his campaign for renomination, it was announced yesterday. Senator Lennon’s appearance at Chapel Hill is being sponsored jointly by the Orange County and Campus Young Democrats as a part of their “Meet Your Candi date” series, in which former Gov ernor W. Kerr Scott appeared re cently here. Senator Lenhon, who will speak at 8 p.m. in Carroll Hall will dis cuss his position on domestic and international issues in the current senatorial campaign. He will arrive at the Carolina Inn at 6 p.m. and be escorted to the Pines for a dutch public din ner in his honor at 6:30 p.m. Res ervations for the dinner may be made by calling Leroy Merritt at The Hines, Bryant Hare at b-5513, Clyde C. Carter at 9-5753 or John Q. LeGrand at 9-8,li: The latter three men are in charge of ar rangements for the dinner. Fund Campaign For Red Cross Goes Over Top Hillsboro—The 1954 fund cam paign of the Orange County Red Cross Chapter went over its goal, Chairman Quentin Patterson an nounced this week after receiving the final division report. A total of $2,051.87 was raised by the chapter campaign and 852 new members were added to the rolls. This year’s goal was $2,010. In announcing th drive’s conclu sion, Patterson had high praise for those who assisted him. He said everybody he contacted was 100 percent willing to cooperate. He termed it “very encouraging to be associated with people like that.” The "amount raised by the vari ous divisions into which the cam paign was divided and the captains of each unit were as follows: busi ness division, Bart O’Neal. $231.60; Efland residential division, Mrs. John Forrest, $70; Industrial divis ion, W. V. Fryer and iVemon Truesdale. $542.70; Hillsboro resi dential. These items are either invisible or'only dimly seen under ttse old lights in the picture at bot tom, but are clearly shown in the picture at top, New Hillsboro Street Lights Win Acclaim Hillsboro’s new street lights j were turned on for the first time 1 Monday night and the improve-1 ment has won universal acclaim from citizens and visitors who this week have been in the downtown area. Providing 20 times more light than the old type bulbs and rc flcetcrs which the town has used since the streets have been elec trically lighted, the new mercury vapor lights bring 44,000 candle power of light to the area from Eno River bridge to the Confed erate Memorial Library on Chur ton Street and from the Colonial Inn to Court Square on King Street. One long-time resident of Hills boro said the new lights were the “best thing that’s happened to Hiiisboro in the last 10 years.” Mayor Ben Johnston officially pulled the switch cutting on the new lights Monday night. Manager C. E. Scott of Burlington, area manager for Duke Power Company, and W. E. Apple Jr., Duke Power Co. engineer, were here for the cutting-on ceremony. The new type lights are especial ly designed for business streets and high-speed traffic arteries gnd have been installed in only a few towns in this part of the country. SMOKE HOUSE BURNS On Monday morning around 2 o’clock, the smoke house of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Parker of Caldwell burned to the ground. There were around 100 baby .chicks and the meat from two hogs lost. "ST Fire Destroys Carrboro House CARRBQRO — Fire of unde termined origin broke out Jast Sunday evening in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Godfrey on Oak Ave. in Carrboro. The fire had gotten such a start when discovered that very little of the furnishings of the home was saved, and the house is so badly burned that it probably can not be prepared. . It was owned by Brodie Lloyd and Miles Andrews, and no insur ance was carried on the building. The loss by. the fire is a heavy one. - Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey have four children;' and they were ill with measles at the time of the fire. The work is being supervised lo cally by the Orange County farm agents and vocational teachers in accordance with plans drawn by F. J. '• Saturday Is Deadline For Candidates To File For Political Office 4 21 Democrats Running In Primary Election; GOP Slate In Making Saturday afternoon at 6 o'clock is the deadline for filing for polit ical office in this year’s elections in Orange County. With a full slate of candidates in the race for most positions, few additional Democratic candidates arc expected before Saturday’s deadline. However, members, of the Re publican Party have been lining up their candidates this week and last-minute filers can be expected for most positions. A meeting to arrerifee a GOP slate was held in Carr boro Tuesday night, and sev eral candidates were selected and others who will probably run are being contacted for confirmation.. More than one Republican for each job is not expected and a Repub lican Primary is not considered likely. There will be no state-wide Republican Primary this year eith er, so Republican names will not likely appear Oh the ballot until Fall. All candidates, however, must file prior to Saturday’s deadline to get their names oa the General Election ballots. Among Republicans who agreed to run at (Tuesday’s^ meeting in Carrboro, according to one party spokesman, were Louis Sparrow of Chapel Hill for Sheriff, Thayer Lloyd of Chapel Hill for Register of Deeds, and A. G. Crawford and E. A. Neville for County Commis sioner. Democratic candidates as of to day include 11 for county com missioner, four for sheriff, two for register of deeds, and one each for clerk of court, house of repre sent afivest* and board of education. In addition, there is one Demo cratic candidate for constable in •Chapel Hill township. The only position for which there is no candidate is that of coroner, a position now held by Allen II. Waiker, Hillsboro funeral director. ■ . .—--__ School Board Leader Files; Sykes In Race Hillsboro—Only two candidates for political office filed with the Board of Elections this week, one of them an incumbent. Announcing yesterday as a can didate for renomination as a mem ber of the Orange County Board .. of Education was Charles W. Stan ford of the White Cross section of Southern Orange, who has been a member of the school board for 19 years. Mr. Stanford, prominent dairy farmer, has been active in the county’s political life for many years, has served as Chairman of the Board of Education for the past two years. He will be seeking the Democratic party nomination for the poet which carries a six year term. Thus far, he has no opppei- . tion. Earlier he had indicated his intention to retire from the board, but finally acceded to the urging of "friends that he seek to return to the board. €. F. Hendricks, Associate Professor of Church Community Development, South inary, Wake Forest, • and State western Baptist Theological Sem Grange Chaplain, will be speaker at the annual New Hope Grange banquet on Wednesday night, Ap ril 21, 7 o’clock. Mr. Hendricks is widely known for his outstanding work with ru ral churches, having been select ed as "Rural Minister of the year” for North Carolina by the Progres sive .Farmer in 1949. In 1950 the Olive Chapel Church of Apex, of which he was minister, was select ed in a nation wide poll of minis ters by thp. "Christian Century” as one of twelve outstanding church in America worthy of study. National publicity followed in the Christian Century, Life Magazine, and other leading jour nals. Others appearing on the Orange program will be Don S. Matheson, county farm agent, E. T. Camp bell, local Grange Master, and J. R. Pulley of Durham. County Boards ■ • $ ii lx 5ef ivieeTings On Bond Issue Hillsboro—(The Boards of Educa tion and County Commissioners are scheduled to meet next Tuesday to approve formal resolutions on the issuance of $65,000 in bonds to help build the new Cameron Park Elementary school in Hillsboro. Decision to issue the bonds was made by the Commissioners at the first-Monday meeting this month. . last night the Board of Educa tion met to consider bids for re pairing the roofs at Efland and at Hillsboro schools, to. correct condi tions which have been critized by the Grand Jury at several recent •terms of Superior Court The Rev. Garland Hendricks Matteson Gets Promotion The Secretary of the Navy has announced the promotion of Eldon Franklin Matteson to the grade of Lieutenant Commander in the U k an Ensign in the Civil Engineer ing Corps in 1943 and served with the 7th and 147th Construction Battalions on Okinawa. For the past years Lt! Cdr. Matteson has served as Command ing Officer of Naval Reserve Con struction Battalion, Division 6-5 in* * - Raleigh. The unit has billets open for young men between 17 Vi and 1814 years who are interested in affiliating with a Naval Reserve unit. These young men should be interested in working in the con struction industry and being train ed in their rate, so that in the e- - vent of call fo active duty they will have the opportunity of serv ing with a CB unit ' r
