AIRPLANES IN HORACE WILLIAMS 'AIRPORT • •attendants remember the Tejcas game of ‘48 ESPECIALLY ON FOOTBALL WEEKENDS: Pmfiedge1 Photo University's Airport Has Grass Strips, Many Planes By CHARLES DUNN mnBOEBMMDBBHHRWaHliiMBamfHMQnUMMqMmRlMt If ydu are one' of the many people who have trouble find ing a parking place for your cap, what you need is an air plane. .. - "If 1 can t find a place for my ! car, I surely*couldn’t find a place j big enough to park a plane," you 1 retort. ., - - j But you are wrong The Uni-, versify does have an airport. It is the Horace WiUiaras Airport and it is JocatatV »t tfiis end of the Airport Rtf?, to the north" of Chapel Hill. And‘f'& fs" a large airport, too. In fact,jt js rumored to be the largest itVife airport in the country. At present planes based on the aftport^ and all* JO pilots who fly cither for busi ness or pleasure. This year there are ho student planes at the air port, but oeasfcionally a student will bring a plane up for a week end. CUSTODIANS , C.L. (Mr: Charlie) Martindale and Mtax Green are now the cus-' todians of the airport. They take care of the planes that are kept there and of ter whatever assis tance they planes that.drop Tri for fuel/V for a visit to the town and Uni versity. ' . Green, who has been in the Air Force, is a'sfuderit here and' is majoring in English: He is from Asheville? Mr. Charlie, a War I, lives otit on the Durham ‘ Rtf'., and has been working at the §irport for about 12 years: Mr. Charlie works in- the -mornings, and Green takes- over when he gets out of class and works, lin- “ til sunset or .until all of the planes 'are in. The airport is busiest on foot bail weekends, £n average of 20 out>of.-town visitors fly in for Somes of the home football games. For the Oklahoma game including six from Oklahoma. BIGGEST * . But the Sig 'game, at least from the standpoint of the staff at the airportXwasfhe Carolina-Texas i game in 1948. Mr. Charlie re call that he was "putting them away on the average of two a minute, and then they were eight deej^ in the landing pattern at tifnes.” Most of these planes contained Texans complete witlj. “those big hats, and tailored cowboy suits.” 'And, as Mr. Charlie re calls, the Texans were in a bet ting moods often betting at 10. fo 1 odds, "if I had known Caro lina was going to win that game,' I wouldn’t be here now," Mr. Charlie said. T4 YEARS OLD The airport was bdift in 1M1 on around #00 acres of land, most. of “which was donated By the late Horace Williams, profes sor at the University. It was built by the Work Projects Adminis tration (WPA). During the war around 22 planes were housed on the field, many df which were used in training programs here and at Duke University. No matter Ijow much air travel picks up in the next several years, the University airport is well fixed for space. The* three runways are all over 4,300 feet in length, (one is 5,000 feet long), and there is plenty of space to park aircraft. But if business gets too good there is going to be a greht need for hangers. The present hanger holds about lline planes, and there "s a small hanger (hat can. holft one plane. \ A Human County History There has been, in recent . years, a big improvement in the writing of county histories. There is less emphasis on dry faets and more on people. “Zeb’s Black Baby”, a short history of Vance County, N. C., is an example. The author of it is an old Chapel Hillian, Samuel Thomas Peace, who was once the only employee of the oply bank in Chapel HilL and who used to take the funds home with him nights for safekeeping. He came here from Oxford but has lived ipany" years W Henderson: — Vance County was named for Senator Zebulon B. Vance, who looked kindly on a political ma neuver which formed the county 'out' of lffanvTIle, "Frank 1 in and Warren counties. Because it was likely to go Republican, Vance mpied the new ^ounty “Zeb’s Black Baby”, according to a leg end cited by Peace. * * * This book is rich in legend and not a little folklore, which give life and color to the whole narrative. People who like good historical reading will enjoy .this in such a way as not to confuse it with documented history. The human factor is uppermost For example, there is a chap ter on the Nut Bush Presbyterian Church, which . on January 20, 1868, convicted and excommuni cated a girl for becomipg an un wed mother. “She and her babe were put in a two-horse wagon tbut not by the church) and pro vided with a Negro driver. The mother of the yoohg girl stuck by her daughter and went along too. When the wagon arrived at the foothills of the mountains of West Virginia it was met by a young man who took charge of the wagon and the colored mah was told to get back home the best way he could. And that was the last the folks back home ever saw' of the young girl and her child”, Peace’s book is evidence that the good old days were not good for everybody. There Were cruel ty, crudity, and much drinking of corn liquor. But there was al so much humor and practical joking, At the battle of Mechaii icsville in June, 1862, a private wanted to be excused on the ground fhaf he- was sick. “Yes, damn. it”, said the, captain, “I know you . are sick. But it’s only -t^.Mtjgficjd_colk, Hl not ex cuse, you.” *' * * Peace gives considerable spaci to the old homes of the town ata< county and to the people wh< lived in them; likewise to the ris of business and industry.' The biographical sketches re veal some of the strange thing; that can ljuppen to a human life In fact, .the whole book of 4ii pages is a record of the strang things that can occur’ in a seem ingly small and ordinary com munity. It’s a good job done wit! affection and humor_P.R. I OFFICE OF E. M.
