Women voters urge school board to take de-segregation initiative The Chapel Hill League of Wom en Voters has urged the local echoed board to take the initiative hi de-segregation of Negro first grade pupls, rather than await an application for re-assignment. This was expressed in a state ment to the School Board from . Mrs. Everett Rush. President of the non-partisan women’s group. * The letter to Board Chairman Dr. J. Kemp ton Jones expressed the formal opinion of the League's; Board, based on “substantial agreement” ef League members. It will be the tjiirl election held on the quest.on. The last referen dum, held .in August, was defeated by six votes. The board's decision followed a request (01* the election submi t d by representatives of the residents of the White Cross area and mem bers of the Orange County School Board. The referendum will probab'y be held sometimes in February, the earliest possible date under a law which requires six-month lapse between referendums on a question. C. W. Stanford, a White Cross resident and chairman of th« County Board of Education pre dicted Monday that the next elec tion will pass “because the young er people in the community have lent their efforts to get it passed.” Carr boro asks more time to buy school An extension of time for pur chase of the old Carrboro School property has been asked by the Town of Carrboro, Last summer the municipality bid $30,000 for the un-used build ing with the idea of converting it to use as a town hall.
