Town warns sign owners; March 15 is deadline
The Town of Chapel Hill has
served notice that it intends to
'enforce a five-year-old zoning law
<that will require the removal by
March M of highway billboards in
*he suburban zoning district.
Also concerned with the growing
juimber of commercial signs in
the downtown business district, the
iftoard of Aldermen has asked the
•Chapel Hill-Carrboro Merchants
Association for a recommendation
-as to control legislation. Several
.years ago the merchants body
urged the passage of strict curbs
•on signs. However the business
-district was excepted from the
■ordinance that was subsequently
.passed on this matter.

'will be expanded into three addi
tional rooms through use of a $400
-appropriation approved by the
"Town aldermen.

{fiscal year to provide needed shelv
ing and table space. The money
will go for rent on the rooms,
which are to be converted from
apartment space, she said.

Tax take tops
in Chapel Hill,
auditor says
Tax collections showed a modest
improvement for the Town of
Chapel Hill according to the report
of the Town Auditor for fiscal
1958-69.
In his annual statement to the
Board of Aldermen Auditor Erie
Peacock noted “some improve
ment" in the financial position of
the Town’s general fund, for which
* $304,000 was budgeted during the
year.
