NEW YEAR THEME
Circles of the Society of Chris
tian Service of the Carrboro Meth
odist Church met Monday with
the president Mrs. Garland Whit
field. presiding. The program had
a new year theme, under the di
rection of Mrs. Willis Knight, vice
president, and program chairman
of the Society. The devotional was
given by Mrs. Herbert Watson,
using as her topic “A New Years
Meditation.” Mrs. Whitfield gave
a report of accomplishments of
the society last year and plans
were discussed for the future.
She later served punch with cake
spelling "Happy New Year," nuts
and mints.
CHURCH OF GOD REVIVAL
Revival Services began Sunday
at the Church of God. Assisting
in the services each evening at
7 o’clock is the Rev. Mitchel Ed
wards, of Creswell. soloist, who
plays the guitar. Mr. Edwards has
just returned from attending a
pastors school in Panama. The
pastor of the Carrboro Church of
God is the Rev. A. A. Hannah.
FIRE AT WOMBLES’
A fire causing much damage
was discovered early last Friday
evening at the home of Mrs. W.
C. Womble on Route Three, Chapel
Hill. The fire in the Essel Wom
ble apartment of the home was
caused by a shortage in a drop
cord. Mr. Womble returning home
after a short absence, found the
fire burning a chair, curtains and
other furniture in the room. Call
ing in help, the men were able to
confine the fire to this one room.
But for a time R was a hard fight
with the Oane% .
BAPTIST W.M.U. HONORS
MRS. STOKES . .
The Woman’s Missionary Society
of the Carrboro Baptist Church
met Tuesday evening. Mrs. W. E.
Williams, president of the society,
presided. A program on Cuba was
given by the Florence Lide Cir
cle. with Mrs. Frances Latta as
chairman.

honoring Mrs. Henry B. Stokes,
wife of the pastor of the church
here for the past five years. Mrs.
Stokes, a loyal worker in the so
ciety, was presented a lovely lace
table cloth. The Stokes family will
leave soon for their new home in
Tryon, where the Rev. Mr. Stokes
has accepted a call to become the
Pastor of the First Baptist Church
there.

Dwight Ray, who has been seri
ously ill as a patient in Memorial
Hospital since Dec. 30, shows some
improvement at this time.
MRS. OWEN IMPROVING
Mrs. Albert Owen who suffered
a bad faV at her home here three
weeks ago, is improving at this
time. Though Xrays of the in
juries show no bones were broken
in the fall, they have proven most
painful during these weeks.
HAS BIRTHDAY
IN NEW HOME
Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Woods
moved into their new heme in
Plantation Acres in Carrboro last
week.
Stevie Woods, one year old son
of Mr. and Mrs. Woods celebrat
ed his first birthday, which was
Jan. 8, Saturday, with friends
and relatives sharing with him
ice cream and birthday cake.

and Mrs. Bradshaw.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Tillman and
son Joe were visitors at the week
end to Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Moody
and family in Sanford.

Mi's. Eric Riggs bee of Carrboro
has bees a patient in Memorial
Hospital in CM; *01 for the

family of Greensboro were visitors
to relatives in Chapel Hill and
Carrboro last weekend.
Mrs. Jesse Hackney left last
Sunday for Florence, S. C., where
she will spend several days with
her daughter Mrs. Bill Pressley,
Mr. Pressley and family. She will
also visit her sister, Mrs. Harry
Weaver, and other relatives in
Florence before returning to her
home here.
Walter Brock well, has been
seriously ill at his home here fol
lowing a stroke at his home Jan.
5. His condition at this time is
most serious.
