THERE ARE AS MANY WAYS
to figure it as there are statisti
cians, but a fellow armchair
mathematician has calculated that
the full-time resident population
of the community of Chapel Hill
—meaning the citizenry within the
Township—grew by about 28 per
cent (i8,000 to 23,000) during the
1950-60 decade, according to pre
liminary census totals. (Story on

THE IDEA OF TYING IN THE
Hanna St. sector to the previous
ly-proposed annexation area in
Carrboro is: considered in some
well-informed quarters to be a
move on the part of opponents of
the expansion move to defeat the
whole idea when the next refer
endum is called. The. Cariboro

AND SPEARING OF ANNEXA
tions, the developers of-the Ridge
field tract in Chapel Hill are pre
paring to petition the town for
annexation of all the rest of this
expanding residential area. The
new territory could accommodate
well over 100 additional houses.
Some of the new subdivision has
already been approved for de
velopment.
FURTHER ON MATTERS MUN
icipal—The Bank of Chapel Hill
on Tuesday purchased the Town
of Carrbqro’s $30,000 bond anti
cipation hpte for a three per cent
interest offer. This means the
town can close the deal for pur
chase of the old Carrboro School
land within a few days. And the
Chapel Hill aldermen yesterday
approved the sale of $80,000 in
bond anticipation notes for sani- ,
tary and storm sewer work to be
done this summer .

Prove Progressiveness in Poll!
The long-postponed poll questionnaire on fluoridation
of the Chapel Hill water supply has now been sent out by
the University Service Plants.
A return deadline of May 51 has been set for the
cards. After the votes are totalled, University Business
Manager j. A. Branch has said, the University will be gov
erned by the wishes of the majority. v
The News is confident; that the vote will be signifi
cantly FOR fluoridation. /
But we hope further that it will be overwhelmingly
in favor of a well-established and scientifically proven
beneficial process that is without exception favored by all
of the doctors and dentists to whom we entrust our health
in this community.
It will then- be firmly established that Chapel Hill
cannot be stampeded by scare campaigns. It will then be
clear that Chapel Hill is an educated as well as an edu
cational community.
