of orange county -Chapel Hill, Hillsboro, Carrlforo—Between and Beyond— VOL. 67 NO. 25 HILLSBORO AND CHAPEL HILL, N. C., THURSDAY, JUNE 30, 1960 20 PAGES THE ENDURANCE CONTEST is now on: Whose campaign pos ters will stay up the longest along the highways. One of the best things Luther Hodge% ever did in his political career was to make all of his helpers prom . ise to take down his posters right after the election. In Chapel Hill, during the past week, the police have been pulling ’em down. The highway crews have also been removing ’em from the right-of way. But there are still quite a few forlorn reminders remaining. HIS FACE SHOULD BE RED —the fAstrated burglar, that is, who cut the screen on a window of the John Byars home in Mi. Bolus near Chapel Hill. He found the window locked and aban doned his attempt, leaving the knife at the scene. Investigating deputies found a big plate glass < door alongside the window was unlocked, though. The Byars are out of town for a while. The rob ber was also unsuccesful in a similar try at tbo Wilbur Sen ‘"wSnelfSfi But he did succeed in entering Mrs. Edith Nye’s home via the window. It’s not known if anything is missing, for she’s also out of town. I THE SWIMMING POOL builders out in Homestead com munity are using an unusual liner for their reinforced con crete pool. It’s a custom-cut one eighth inch sheet of 20-gauge green vinyl, that will be held flush against the pool surface by pressure of the .water. This cov ering is far superior to paint, it’s been determined, because it’s so smooth that dirt and algae can’t stick to it, the pool won’t have to be drained for cleaning, and it won’t have to be painted. NOT MUCH WAS SAID ABOUT | it, but the State Association of County Commisioners meeting in Morehead City last week voted to ask the 1961 General Assem bly to study the fiscal problems resulting in counties that have a substantial amount of state-owned tax-exempt property. Orange County's commissioners ha\>e been particularly interested in this matter. PUSHING POOL TO COMPLETION—Work ing undor lights ovory night, volunteer members of the Homestead Community Center Corpora tion are rushing to completion a 50 by 25-foot swimming pool beside their two-year-old com munity building near Calvander. 'Red’ Altemuel ler, chairman of the project, predicts it'll hold water by the time of the organization's annual picnic on July 12. It’s cost, using volunteer labor of the 35 member families, will be under $5, 000. Every member has pledged at least eight hours labor on the project. A wading pool and bath house will be built beside the pool. News Photo Sanitary district discussed ★ ★ —Story on Page 4 ★ ★★ ★ ★★ ★★★ Both candidates ’win in Cameron Park —Story on Page 8
