Business groups to form industry-seeking body An industrial development cor poration will be formed for Chape) HiH and Carr boro under auspices of the chambers of commerce- for the twin mun icipalities. Plans for organizing the hi dustry-prcmotion group were made at an initial meeting Tuesday night of representa tives of the Chapel Hill-Carr ^ boro Merchants Association and the Carrboro Chamber of Com merce: R. B. Fitch Jr., of the Carrboro Chamber's .Industrial Committee, was elected tempor- I. ary chairman of the group. It will next meet oa Thurs day evening, Feb. 23, at which time a report will be heard from two committees named at this week’s meeting. One of these ; groups is for the formation of ! a corporation, and consists of Emery Danny Jr.. Bernice Ward, and Raymond Andrews. The other on organization of a stock sale campaign, is headed by Calvin Burch and consists also of Joe Augustine and Bernard Whitefield. In Cattlwfb vv^ Mtiyor cast vote to defeat trailer zone Mayor C. T. Ellington’s tie breaking vote has prevented a zone change that would have per mitted W. T. Durham to set up a residential trailer court on his newly-annexed property in Carr boro. Durham’s nine-acre tract on the western edge ol town was planned as a 100-unit mobile homes development, subject to his re-zoning petition. Four acres of this property was annexed to the town at the own er’s request last month-, and the trailer zone waa^set up especial ly for his anpl subsequent de velopers. Owners of nearby prop erty spoke both for and against the proposed re-zoning at a re cent public hearing on the mat ter. Vote break-down At Tuesday evening’s Carrboro Commissioners meeting E. O. Hardee moved that Durham’s pe tition to change his territory from a residential to trailer zone be ap- j proved. Ralph Morgan seconded the motion. Commissioners Eu gene Sturdivant ancLOffifr Durham voted against the motion, and Wil son Lackey abstained. Commission er Harold Dark was absent. Mayor i 1 Ellington cast the rare tie-break i ing vote to eliminate the 2-2 deadlock and defeat the motion. In other matters of business, the resignation of night police men E. B. Riggsbee was an nounced and Town Clerk R. B. Todd was asked to begin look ing for a replacement. Mr. Riggsbee has taken a job with the University. After hearing a report from engineer Thomas D. Rose the Board agreed to install a sewer line on Pleasant Drive. The town clerk was directed to obtain a survey of the area, establish proposed I boundary lines, and obtain a house count for a report at the Board’s next meeting. At that time, it was suggested, the date for a legal hearing on the annex ation might be set. There was some discussion of the extension of the high-value fire district in downtown Carr boro. An assortment of Christmas lights and equipment was pur chased from the Chapel Hill Carrboro Merchants Association I for $25.
