—Chapel Hill, Hillsboro, Carrboro—Between and Beyond— of orange county HILLSBORO AND CHAPEL HILL, N. C., THURSDAY, MARCH 16, 1961 VOL. 69 NO. 11 24 PAGES issue Saturday citizens' leaders —Story on Page 2 4 ELOQUENT JIM WALLACE was spokesman Monday night for residents of the King’s Mill Rd. neighborhood of Chapel Hill who don’t want traffic from a new de velopment funneled through their neighborhood. They won then point with the Board of Aider men which deferred action on approval of a plat for the adjoin ing subdivision. Referring to the background on development of their neighborhood, Wallace quippd that if it were a mystery book it ought to be entitled "The Case of the Receding Arbore tum,,”—an allusion to plans for a natural garden in this area. YOU'D NATURALLY EXPECT such a rumor to crop up about now. But we heard it sure enough this week. There’s sentiment brewing up again now for calling a fourth election in the White Cross School Attendance Area on merger of this district into the Chapel Hill School System. AN EXTRAORDINARY VEN ture into good public relations was the five-column newspaper ad placed by Durham contractor Nello Teer in the Durham news paper-yesterday. An open letter to Durham and Chapel Hill cit izens, it showed a map of the prpposed two-mile dual-laning project the Teer firm has just started on the Raleigh Rd. in Chapel Hill. Then it explained plans for the job in detail, and invited persons so desiring to telephone ’em in Durham for the answers to any other questions. AN UNUSUAL INCIDENT Oc curred Monday night connection with the picketing in front of Chapel Hill’s Carolina Theater. Because of the heavy rain the two picketers, including the Rev.' Charles M. Jones, moved up on the paved portion of the side walk under the theater marquee. Within moments local police an swered a call to the scene. In re sponse to the theater manage ment’s request the police or dered the pickets back to the outer edge of the sidewalk. The next day in a conference it was established the pickets had been within their rights. Each pick eter is now carrying a copy of this regulatory ordinance in or der to clarify any further lega1 questions if and when they come up. developments are de veloping fast on the local politi cal front. Last minute flash late yesterday was that Chapel Hill’s Andy Shearer is about ready to ■ give in to heavy pressure urging him to run for the Town Board. Two Wallaces—Jimmy and Earle —are also being pushed for the Chapel Hill School Board, as is Carrboro’s hustling PTA leader Mrs. Neal Kaylor. Circulation Today ff PCT.
