C., THURSDAY, MARCH 23, 1961 24 PAGES RESIDENTS OF THE KINO'S Mill Rd. neighborhood in Chapel Hill appeared before the County Commissioners sitting ns the Board of Education and Review on Monday to ask that their prop erty taxes be lowered because of the heavy dust from the un paved roads in their area. They’ve been hoping to get their roads paved on a participating payment basis. But some proper ty owners are withholding their payments now pending settle ment of the location of a bridge across Morgan Creek that would funnel more traffic into the de velopment, the delegation re ported. ESCAPADES OF SCARLETT Scott’s ill-fated pink horse were revived Monday night when Chap el Hill police rescued Kemp Nye’s tin elephant from two students who had it in tow apparently re turning it to its station in front of the downtown music shop. Larceny charges were considered against the pair. But the issue was dropped at Kemp’s request. He said the pachyderm model ac tually belonged to one of the boys anyhow. The animal had been painted pink and be-slogan ed before the cops rescued it. Similarly Scarlett Scott’s pink merry-go-round horse, which she intended as a front yard symbol for her curio shop, was several times swiped and painted up by college students before she gave it up in despair a few years ago. SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES CAP tured a 1950 Dodge sedan and 20 cases of non-tax paid whiskey ‘Friday afternoon on Highway 70, east of Hillsboro. -Deputies ^ Bob McCulloek and C. W. Riley be came suspicious of the vehicle and tried to stop it for investiga tion when the two occupants jumped out, leaving it running down the highway. The deputies had to stop the car first to pre vent a possible accident, enabl ing the two- occupants to- make good their getaway. CARRBORO TOWN ATTOR ney L. J. Phipps was kidded at a meeting Tuesday night by town Commissioners who said he had something to eat in a bag he brought to the meeting. “Here, I want you to start eating right now,” said the “Judge,” as he reached into the bag, pulled out some small white boxes, and handed one to each commission er. They contained several books of matches with each commis sioner’s name imprinted on his. MEMBERS OF THE CHAPEL Hill ^police force are currently competing for selection on a 10 man emergency squad being or ganized within the Department by Chief Bill Blake. The mem bers will be named in May. Each will be issued a special padded riot helmet and undergo inten sive training in defensive tactics and handling of mob emergency situations.
