JUNE IS, 1941 ALL HAIL THE INDOMfTA ble English sparrow, legally known as the House Sparrow. A nest of ’em has for years held squatters rights in the wooden . “C” letter of ‘The News, Inc.” letters across the front of The News’ office building in Carr boro. They were cleaned out this week when a complete re-paint' ing job was done on the building. —But two days later they’d set up an all-new higger-than-ever -straw palace on two decks of the “S” in “News.” THE CHAPEL HILL - CARR boro Merchants Association is promoting a new shopping fea ture for Father’s Day this year. This Friday evening downtown stores are to be open with the idea that it’s a time specially re served for mom to do shoppng lor Dad’s Day this Sunday. CHOICE QUIP OF THE SE mantically sensational public hearing on zoning in Chapel Hill Monday night was that of an ar chitect for Townhouse apart ments who was asked if garbage cans for the apartment dwellers would face Franklin SL homes. He replied that they would “in a relative sense only." When the audience quieted down again he declared that the cans would be a good distance away from the street-fronting homes. HEIGHTS OF HEART-FELT extemporaneous oratory were reached by some citiaeas of the area who spoke in opposition to the apartment project and for the re-zoning. Heart of the mattei was the sanctity of symbolic E as the spiritual soul of Chapel Hill. One spokesman re called that when he moved there an old-timer told him “God has laid his hand on E. Rosemary St.” Another declared that to a great many people “E. Franklin St. is the distilled image of old Chapel Hill.” THE NEWS KEEPS SO BUSY reporting the NEWS about the moves of its oounty-wide- consti tuency it forgot to report last week its own office move in downtown Hillsboro. The Nows office is now back in the same old stand in the Cole Building, opposite the Old Courthouse, on the West side of Churton Street, from whence it moved hack in 1963. The new quarters are de cidedly more comfortable than the old ones, and decidedly more comfortable than when vacated by The News eight years ago to permit renovation. Phil J. Thom as, most recent occupant, has moved his bookkeeping business to his home on Orange Grove Road. No change has been made T in the location of its printing ir plant and offices at 311 E. Main St., Carr boro. THE COUNTY COMMISSION ers Monday night denied the Town Of Hillsboro permission to •purchase its gasoline at whole sale prices from the county’s tank. County and town officials were under the impression such service had been offered previ ously. The commissioners had other ideas, however, indicating by formal action the sale of gas to non-county users would not be permitted.
