Haydon declares after Soviet visit ...
Russian .composers keep on
turning out party line music
By BILL SCARBOROUGH
Contemporary American music
and pea-formers enjoy a healthy
but secret respect in Soviet Rus
sia, says the Chairman of the
'University Department of Music,
just back from a 30-day tour of
* the Soviet Union.
Dr. 'Tilen Haydon, one of four
U. S. Musicologists sent to the
USSR by the State Department
as part of its Cultural Exchange
Program, said that Soviet com
posers still shy away from “de
cadent Western formalism” (a
term that covers everything ex
cept Strauss waltzes) in their
compositions, although they eag
erly seek scores and recordings
of music by modern American
v composers.
The State Department supplied
both scores and recordings in
quantity, which were presehted
by the U. S. musicologists to li
braries and conservatories in
several Russian cities.

Haydon and three associates
visited a number of Soviet con
servatories and universities dur
ing the tour, exchanging infor
mation with Russian musicolo
gists and composers. He is a Ke
nan Professor of Music at UNO.
Modern Russian music, Haydon
said, is competent, but nothing
new. Generally it is written in
the tradition of the classical Rus
sian composers, and draws heav
ily on folk music and patriotic
themes for its material.
Although Russian composers do
i well financially, they are still
' subject to tight restrictions on
j what sort of music they may
! compose. All compositions in
Russia must first be passed on
by the Union of Composers and
Musicologists, meeting in plen
ary session. Then, having receiv
ed approval there, the piece may
be performed in public.

“Quite different from the days
when Four-H was only for those
who could raise cows or bake
muffins,” stated Mrs. Elizabeth
Spencer as she told the group of
