LAND OF ORANGE By Quentin Patterson S°il Conservation Service Ponds have been laid out re recent ly Zollie Andrews, J. E. McBipom, J. W. Kirk and Sons, and A. G. Crawford, Orange Grove, and for M. M. Cole and Donald Hue Oakley, Cedar Grove. Some of them will store water for livestock, others for irrigation, and some will serve both purposes as well as fish production and recreation. Interest in ponds as part of soil and water conservation r systems is increasing again. During the first seven months of 1961, 35 ponds have been laid out by the Soil Conserva tion Service. On 24 of these. -.ACP assistance has been al lotted for storage of water for livestock or irrigation. Ponds were checked out re cently for W. E. Pope, and O. K. Blalock, Cedar Grove, and C. E. Atkins, Carr. Built according to specifications furnished by the Soil Conservation Service, these ponds are designed to handle safely the heaviest rains of a fifty year period. The ASC Com mittee had previously approved these ponds and the ACP will share about % of the costs as a permanent conservation measure. With the approach of fall, it is time to begin thinking about establishing conserva tion cropping systems. A con servation cropping system is one that will hold soil losses down to the three or four tons per acre annual average dur ing the rotation that is as much as most of our fields can afford On ''tobbaco land, 20 pounds fescue mixed and seeded with small grain will begin a profit able rotation. In addition to its soil conserving value, it will mean better use of irrigation water or rainfall when the field is next in tobacco. The reduction of nematodes and disease are other benefits. EYEBANK CANISTER DONATED The Carrboro Lions Club has donated two metal canisters for shipping fresh eye transplants to Memorial Hospital in Chapel HiJl at a recent meeting. The re frigerating canisters will be used by the hospital to send re-usable parts of human eyes to the Rye Bank for Restoring Sight in Winston Salem or to other hos pitals. T. N.
