you throw in the clutch, or in
an automatic-shift car go to neu
tral, apply brakes and cut the
ignition. If you have power steer
nig and brakes, leave the igni
tion on or your brakes won’t
function. The engine may rmace
but you’ll be safe.
If the brakes fail completely,
what should you do?
Try the emergency brake If
that fails to hold, rev the engine
and shift into net lower gear,
and let the engine-drag slow you
down. Rev the engine again and
shift into low or low-drive range
for maimum deceleration and a
controlled stop.
Traffic authorities say emer
gencies like those described
are more common than most
people think.“Many drivers .and
passengers are killed and in
jured each year in unforeseen
incidents they don't know how
to meet.
