Permanent pasture seeding time
is here. The earlier the seed is {Hit
in now, the better chance of sur
viving the winter kill.
Ladino clover is still the best
perennial grazing legume avail
able to us. Use Oregon certified
seed at the rate of two lbs. per
acre.
Then comes the question of
whether to use orchard grass or
fescue mixed with latfino clover.
If orchard grass is indicated, seri
ously consider using the new
Potomac variety which we have
tried rn the county for Several
years, and it is definitely worth
the extra money it costs. Use 12
lbs. per acre in the mixture.
Tall fescue is considered by
many to be the idea! grass to sow
with ladino clover. It is not as
palatable as orchard grass and,
therefore, should hot be used
exclusively on dairy farms, but is
recommended im beef cattle
farms, and on land which is in
dined to be poor or sandy.lt
rrtakes a more vigorous growth i
than orchard grass. Use 10 to 12
lbs. per acre in the mixture.
Lime and fertilizer should be
applied according to the recom
mendations received from a soil j
test, however, as a rule, most of
our land needs 2 tons of lime and
at least 600 lbs. of 2-12-12 fertilizer
| per acre at seeding.
Preparation for permanent pas
ture can usually be accomplished
by disking with a heavy bush and
beg harrow and following with a
double disk harrow until the top i
3 inches are thoroughly pulverized.
These seed are small and should
not be covered more than 1 inch
with soH.
