C., THURSDAY, OCTOBER, 12, 1««1 The News welcomes President to the Land of Orange COUNTY DOG WARDEN CASHE Boggs did pretty well as a cow catcher here recently, using his tranquilizer dart gun. His quarry was a wily runaway bovine that Piedmont Packing Co. bought at auction. Hay after day the free grazing cow would lope off whenever anybody approached to corral it.’ Then casual Cashe walk ed wide around behind the animal and closed in from the rear, walk ing alowly tiM the cow turned to look at him. Ihen as Bossie start ed to run Cashe fired his dart gun from the hip for a bull’s eye in the flank at 60 feet. The cow before, found the loot in the ground on the Stancell. Motor Co, wall of jZ the Gas Co. I|tti<|entally, the whir hens lucked in on a mistaken clue. They thought the final due was “■Kendall,” meaning motor oil s at Stancell’s, instead <5 “candle” — for the gas-burning candle posted outside the Public Service Co. of Ccc- v-' ' ■ ' - dr. AND MRS. ROBERT J. McMullen, who recently moved' to High Point, received a surprise tribute from their fellow Chapel Hill Presbyterians at a congrega tional supper last Sunday. As a token of appreciation for their life and service in Chapel Hill the congregation gave them a check for $575—the cost of an air trip to visit their five children in At lanta, Fulton, Mo., Washington, and Richmond. Dr. John Graham, read a tribSte from the congrega tion. And at the request of the elders, Dr. McMullen’s 9on, Rob. Jr., gave on “loan" to the church a portrait of “Dr. Mac.” DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA the extent of the security meas ures that are being taken with regard to the President’s visit here today? Weeks of painstaking work on the part of University people and Secret Service agents have been put into this matter. .Every culvert, every manhole, every possible danger spot has been sealed off or will be manned • by a guard—from the big drain , pipe under the Stadium to the top of the Sell Tower. THE RALEIGH ROAD BE* tween Chapel Hill and Nelson was given an absolute manicuring yes terday by gangs of convicts and highway workers, all preparatory to JIFK’s private trip over that stretch going to and from the air port this morning. The grass and right-of-ways were clipped almost carpet smooth, and every beer can and chewing gum wrapper in sight was picked up. _ ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE press in connection with JFK’s More Pealmgs on page 2 ■t: $51,457 damages awarded Lloyds for highway losses —Story on Page 2 1 Whammy' may get you... SPEEDERS BEWARE!!—Checking out the new ‘whammy’ radar speed indicator being tried by the Town of Chapel Hill this week are Police Chief V/illiam D. Blake (left) and Sgt. Amos, Horne. The twin-pronged plastic antennae, mounted on the side, or anywhere on a patrol car, will Send out and receive instantaneous impulses to any moving object in alignment with them. These are transmitted onto the sweep hand of the dial in the box being held by Sgt. Horne, immediately showing the speed, of the vehicle being checked to an accuracy of within one mile an hour. The unit being considered for purchase by Chapel Hill is like the 30 recently bought by the State for use of the Highway Patrol in Gov. Sanford’s stepped-up campaign for traffic safety.—News Photo ' • I
