_ FLUORIDATION 'VIOLATES
RIGHTS'
l*o the Editor:
Your editorial features of The
News of Orange County interests
us very much—the article “On
Fluoride: How long, 0 center of
education.”
There are volumes written on
the fluoride. I have no statement
from any chemist who is in
favor of adding-fluoride to pub
lic drink water supply—with one
exception: Dr. Black of Gaines
ville, Fla. Dr. Black’s son manu
factures the _ equipment . that
dumns the poison in the public
drinking water supply. His wife
is vice-president, so it all fits
like a glove. The Blacks profit
by it.
N. C. citizens are beipg taxed
very heavy, without adding any
more expense to their load. I am
wondering who will pay the bill
for the water lines that will have
to be replaced in Chapel Hill,
N. C. You can’t capture, fluorine.
You can’t hold the fluoride long
at a time. This chemical even
eats up fire brick. Let any per
son read reports from men who
have worked with fluoride, look,
the words up in a dictionary—
“Fluoride, Fluorine.”
Also, the W. S. Dispensatory
24th edition on pages 1456 and
1457, it tells the story—no one
profits from not being informed.
I am sure the attorney for the
University of N. C. has read the
Bill of Rights, the Constitution
of the United State's does
guaranteed of citizens the right
to choose. If Chapel Hill does
force fluoridation upon those
people who are against drinking
water that has fluoride added,
has the rights of those people
not been violated?
Respectfully,
Lucy Catlett Austin

FOR POINTS BONDS
fTo the Editor:
Referring to the {proposed
State bond issue to be voted on
by the citizens of North Caro
lina next month, I. as a past
member of the State Ports Au
thority, would urge the citizens
to vote in favor of the bond issue
to double the facilities of our
two ports in Wilmington and
Morehead City.
Let us look at the map of the
United States: The most, impor
tant and progressive states are
port states; port cities are our
greatest cities. Ninety per cent
of the world’s greatest cities are
port cities. , —j
Remember, too, that every
penny of this bond issue,
$13,500,000.00, will be paid back,
to the Treasury of North Caro
lina out of earnings over the
next twenty-five years. We gave
the State Treasurer last Decem
ber a check for $100,000.00—the
only time any State agency has
every given the State a penny.
We ploughed back into our ports
facilities a great amount of earn
ings during the past six years.
!Our new ports are less than ten
years old.
The bond issue is* not a con
tribution by the state or its peo
ple,' but a sound, worthwhile in
vestment that will pay handsome
dividends, and at the same time
keep our state among the leaders
of the _ nation. The State Porta
Authority is a business institu
