Voters of Orange
will go to the polls
for bond vote Tues.
Orange County voters will join, citizens "’across
North Carolina next Tuesday by tasting ballots in a
$61.6 million bond referendum.
Tbe^poHs in ^ county precincts will be open —
from 6:30 a. m. to b:30 p. m. Voters will receive a*
single ballot and will have to individually mark ea h
of the issues on the ballot for which they wish to ex
press a choice—That is, it will not be possible to mane
a single *'X” for or against all issues.
During the recent three-week period of registration
for new voters gtccund 200 names were added to the
rolls, according to Board of Elections Secretary Clvde
Carter. While he hoped for a large turnout, Prof.
Carterjpre'dicted the poll total woud be about the
same as for -the; county bend referendum last March
y, l8~This figure represented 28 per cent of the
total cf 15,198 registered voters in all 28 precincts.

State vote over120,000
seen in bonds approval
. John Unisteaa of Chapel Hill, Chairman of the Statewide
citizens committee for passage of $616 mill ion fcchd Referendum
next Tuesday, predicts approval of the measures by an average
three-to-one proportion. ~
This is about the margin by which mental institutions bends
in a $33 million referendum two years ago were passed There
were around 90 000 for this" issue and 30.000 against.
Rep. Umstead predicted there’d^be somewhat more voting this
time than that the 120,000. turnout of 1959. but noted the margin
of approval would depend on the poll total.
“The reports I’m getting from counties throughout the «ta*e*
indicate that the bonds will pass,” he said. “The main trouble
we’re having is in counties where they’re having local bond ref* i
erendums at the same time. Persons who oppose the local Pro
posals are also opposing the state onps. But I’m heartened by re
ports so far. We don’t seem to be in trouble in more than six or
eight counties.”

were made from Junior Service
League members only, as has
been the custom over the past
few years, so there will not be
competition with previously es
tablished clothing drives. Mrs.
Taylor and Mrs. J. VV. Maultsby,
general chairman of Christmas
House, have been collecting and
storing the clothing during the
drive.
One phase of the drive—that
of collecting all types of shoes
and clothing for the four mem
bers of the retarded children’s
class — will continue throughout
the year and League members
are asked to keep this in mind
when putting away outgrown
clothes. The children range in
age from 8 to 12. Mrs. Frances
Hargraves teaches the class.
“This is such a small number
of children to fake care of” Mrs.
Taylor said, “that we should be
able to do something really worth
while here.”
Christmas House will carry on
the work this year that was be
gun by Empfv Stocking 11 years
ago. The emphasis will be chang
ed from giving gifts that we
think people mav need to letting
them come, with previously dis
tributed coupons, to the Christ
mas House to “buv** those things
their families definitely want and
need.
As in the years past, the sue
cess of the project of giving
Christmas happiness to those who
could not have it otherwise de
pends on the generosity of all
people and organizations in the
community. Donations of money,
food or toys are needed. Cash
gifts can be mailed to P. O. Box

Sheriff Buck Knight identified

should have overturned if he
hadn’t been speeding," Knight
said.
Employees had worked at the
dirt track until midnight Friday.
When they returned to the track
early Saturday they found the
wrecked car and Kyle’s body.
Sheriff Knight said Kyle appar
