THE CHAPEL HILL FIREMEN answered an alarm at 3:30 Mon day morning to extinguish a fire at a duplex under construction on Barclay Road. The dwelling, owned by Don Westall, was ex tensively damaged though the flames were quickly put out. In dications are the fire was caused by a defect in electric wiring. FIREMEN WERE SUMMONED to that and three other alarms during the past week by the newly-installed Phonalarm set-up —a special telephone system set up in the fire department and connected with instruments in the homes of 26 call and regular firemen. When the receiver is picked up in the downtown sta tion all 26 phones automatically -- begin ringing and continue to ring until picked up or hung up. If the phone is in use the conver sation is interrupted by a busy signal so that the fireman can hang up and then receive the alarm summons.
