of orange county —Chapel Hill, Hillsboro, Carrboro—Between and Beyond VOL. 70, NO. 12 HILLSBORO AND CHAPEL HILL, N. C., THURSDAY. MARCH 22, 1962 24 PAGES — A PORTRAIT OF THE LATE Sheriff Oddi Clayton was hung in the County sheriff’s office last Friday afternoon in the presence of members of his family and _a. few friends. Painted by Hillsboro artist Edmund Strudwick, the portrait was secured through public subscriptions in a drive headed by ABC Police Chief Burch Compton who served as a deputy under Sheriff Clayton. THE ORANGE BOY SCOUTS' fifth annual Pinnacles trip last weekend set several records, ac cording to balladry extolled by adult leaders upon their return. Mainly, though, they report it was cold — and still colder. The mercury dipped to 15 degrees at dawn both Friday and Saturday, anl Scout estimates of the wind - velocity set it at an average of a biting 25 m.p.h. during the en tire time. Report was that the boys slept wanner than adults by the simple expedient of balling up like an animal. One lad stay* ed cozy beneath seven heavy woollen covers. THE ALL-DAY HIKE OVER the three-peak Pinnacles near Meadows-of-Dan, Va., was com pleted by all of the 107 who started out. on the 12-mile trek; and none of ’em fell out. In all there were a record 142 scouts and adults who went on the trip —'122 scouts and 20 leaders. fire alarms in chapel Hill have been fortunately sparse during the month of March. — Then three calls came in within an hour daring church time last Sunday. A general alarm was sounded on one in the fire dis trict — a brush btezb in the woods north of Branch St., which burned over about an acre. Min utes after their return the fire men were called to 325 Lindsay St. to put out a minor blaze caus ed by an overheated oil circu lator. And while there fhey re ceived . a call to the postoffice where a trash can was on fire. IT MAY HAVE BEEN ONLY coincidence, Chapel Hill Town Manager Bob Pe^k reports, but traffic accidents in town- were more than halved from the pre vious month’s total in February, when the police department's new radar speed clock was used ex tensively. There were 18 arrests and numerous warnings to speed ers. The February accident total was 11, as compared to 24 in January. THE SOGGY CONDITION OF the rain-soaked grass runway at Horace Williams Airport caused an expensive accident there late last Thursday to a T-28 single engine trainer plane from An drews Air Force Base near Wash ington. In landing the plane wheels mired in so deep that the prop was bent and the engine damaged. A replacement engine had to be shipped from Washing * ton. The Chapel Hill Civil Aii Patrol took note of the mishap in its continuing campaign to have the University improve the inadequate and unsafe facilities of their airport.
