Precinct Circuit...
Strictly unofficial—County political trends
A LOOK AT THE FIELD . . .
— “Now the campaign can really get started. Everything
up till now has been mostly foot shuffling.” So spok«
one of the West Chapel Hill ward heelers early this
week in speculating on the May 26 Democratic primary
What he meant was that the real fur doesn’t begin tc
fly in any campaign until after the filing deadline—
which in this case was last Friday noon.
Comparatively speaking there likely won’t be much
interest in the primary this year as in the past. The
sheriffs race ordinarily carries the competitive banner.
And there's no contest there this year. In fact the coun
ty-wide contest is in the field of six Democratic hopefuls
for the three county commissionedships.
MEANWHILE. BACK WITH THE G. O. P. . . .
The situation is somewhat different with the Repub
licans—who'll have their state-wide primary on the same
day as the Democrats this year. There are no intra
Republican contests in the County—though two county
commissioner hopefuls will be on the general election
ballot.
But the minority party has three “patriots” compet
ing for the Sixth District Congressional seat and two
for the U. S. Senate against Sen. Sam Ervin . . . Inci
dentally, it is known that County Chairman Col. H. L
Robb was strongly urged to run for the U. S. Senate
himself, and gave the matter a bit of deliberation 'be
fore deciding in the negative.
EVERYBODY SAYS ‘VOTE’ . . .
The Republicans may be first out with a general
“get-out-the-vote” appeal this election season. Lawrence
‘Red’ Newman, GOP county commissioner candidate, has
a printed flyer in the works which will call attention
to the opening of registration—and the general re-reg
istration for Chapel Hill Township beginning April 28.
It is known, too, that several other candidates will
key their efforts to registration appeals. And party
workers will ho doubt be concerned likewise to have
their troops properly ensconced in the precinct voting *
books. '
^ Leading off the candidates meetings will be a GOP din
ner sponsored, by the County Republican Committee on
Saturday evening, April 28, in the United Church at Chapel
Hill.-— _
LOOKING EACH OTHER OVER V . .
The candidates themselves were right, much 'Ink evidence
last night at the special dinner honoring Orange ReilNjohn
Umstead. The affair was of course set up for a tribute to
the veteran legislative Bull-of-the-Woods. But there wa®
Heavy Hand Wringing and Great Genial Smiling in evi
dence by a goodly share of primary candidates who
thronged the table-sides, generally looking each other
over and checking on their constituency-potential.
