We’d usual ly divvy it up to give to some body who needed it more’n we did.” ANOTHER MODEST SUR prise feature of the Demo con vention was the presentation to John Umstead of a carved Ma lacca-head cane by Party Execu tive Chairman L. J. Phipps. “You can use this to beat 'off the chal lengers for your office,” quip ped Phipps. A GENERAL OUTDOOR AD vertising spokesman appeared before the Chapel Hill aldermen Monday night to speak out strongly against restrictive pro visions of the commercial zoning ordinance which the Boarr} sub sequently passed. The new law sharply curbs the erection of the big signs in certain business areas. G. 0. ' A VERDICT OF NOT GUILTY was returned against Patrick ' : May, charged in Recorder’s Court Tuesday with larceny of a tire, in the absence of any prosecut ing witness. The UNC student -was shot by J. A. Bowman one night last week after Bowman went outside his house to in vestigate an alleged peeping tom his daughter said she’d seen. May told police he picked up the tire by Bowman’s house as pro tection against the peeping tom he said he’d gone to investigate just before he stopped the load of buckshot. THREE HUNDRED SILVER dollars in prize money was given away Tuesday night in the Bowl ing Tournament at the All-Star Bowling Lanes in Eastgafe. First pri(ze money of 35 cartwheels went-to Nick.Collias with a total score of 642 for three games. Joe Garofalo took second place with 632, for $25. I POLICE SAY THEY HAVE no leads yet on the recent theft of a $200 piece of modernistip steel sculpture from the Paint ings Upstairs gallery in Chapel Hill.. This additional note, though: The energetic thief who __hei$ied the 30-pound work of art didn’t have to be a connoisseur to make his choice. The price tag was on it. A FACT PERHAPS OVER looked by some in considering the merits of the Chapel Hill School tax increase referendum proposal: If the, funds were used as proposed by the school board the net school expenses to many taxpayers would be less, since a $2 per pupil reduction in fees is proposed.
