The County Board of Elections lias declined to take any action in connection with protests raised over political leaflets dis tributed at the Northside and South Carr boro precinct polling places last Saturday. Elections Board Secretary Clyde 'darter went to the two precinct polling places on Sat urady in response to calls from interested parties. (Police and Sheriff’s Deputies took up the literature found there and or dered the persons distributing it to stop. .— . But the Board of Elections did not discuss the issue at its e lection canvass meeting in Hills boro on Tuesday. When question ed specifically after the meet ing, Board members confirmed the confiscation of material but said no further action was con templated. Insofar as can be determined from reading the North Carolina election laws, no statutes actual ly have been violated, ” though some questions pertinent to the local situation were raised. According to information re liably learned by The News two Negro men were involves m the incidents. They wereXhanding out similar sheets to Negro vot ers arriving at the polling plac es. - - The leaflets in question were mimeographed sheets of regular 8%” x 11” paper. On a portion of the paper a part of the coun ty sample ballot was reproduced in typewriter type. On this par tial facsimile of the ballot the names of commissioner candi dates Clarence Jones, Donald MoDade, and Gordon Cleveland and of solicitor candiate Thom-' as D. Cooper were written in bolder letters than those of the other candidates and an “X” mark was placed in the box be side the names of the aforemen tioned. At the side of the ballot draw ing a message was printed, warn ing that the names on the actu al bailors would not necessarily appear in the same order as on the mimeographed facimile, iJt was learned that Edwin Caldwell was distributing these flyers at the Northside polling place and Harold Foster at southside Carrboro. The Ne- ' gro Civic Club last week an nounced its endorsement of the above - mentioned candidates, but it was not established that it sponsored the preparation dtid disributioo of this literature. Elections officials said they had no knowledge of any of these sheets being placed in the ballot boxes. A rumor current in Chapel Hill on Monday and Tuesday had it that sample bal lots were imprinted as noted a bove, handed out, and may have turned up in the ballot boxes. Sample ballots -were available in all polling paces and were even reproduced and printed in news papers prior to the election. These were printed and cut in the same manner and same size as the regular ballots them selves, and were quite unlike the jpoli'.ical leaflets that were dis tributed. — Elections Board Chairman Sam Latta said that as far as he was concerned the matter was closed. He did note, however, the pas At commencement concert ...
