Clyde Barnes of Vandergrift, Pa., father of Mrs. Harold Bierck of Chapel Hill, died in Vandergraft on Tuesday of this week. He was minister of the Vandergraft First Presbyter ian Church from 1927 until his retirement ' in 1960. The winners at Central High School in Hillsboro were Flora Alston, first prize; Frances Hol man, second prize; and Brenda Mebane, third prize. Harold Webb madfe the presentations. Nancy Whitlow won first prize at Hillsboro High School; Kay Barnes, second prize; and Curtis Crutchfield, third prize. 'Mrs. Clyde Roberts will present the awards on June 8 at commence meat exercises. Lincoln High School winners were JESnily Carlton, first prize; Edna Lloyd, second prize; and Ola Gattis, third prize? Mrs, Jane Parker made the presentations. Forty essays were submitted for final judging from five coun ty high schools. In one school alone 175 essays were written from which school officials se lected the 10 submitted for final judging. Members of the Council acting as judges were Dr. D. D. Carroll, Mrs. Jane Parker and James Wight for the Chapel Mill Schools and Paid Carr, Mrs. Clyde Roberts, and Har old Webb for Hillsbgro and Ay cock Schools. Prizes amounted to first prize, $50; second prize, $30; and third prize, $20. Winners are receiving certificates of award along with their cash prizes. The essay written by Douglas Johnston;-Chapel Hill High School, has been chosen for pub lication in Inventory, a bimonth ly publication of the N. C. Al coholic Rehabilitaton Program, It will appear in the May-June issue. ■; The Essay Contest will be sponsored again by the Orange County Council on Alcoholism in the next school year with the aim of developing more public understanding and interest in the illness known as alcoholism.
