—Chapel Hill, Hillsboro, Carrboro—Between and Beyond— VOL. 7d NO. 30 - HILLSBORO AND CHAPEL HILL, N. C., THURSDAY, JULY 26, mF - —24 PAGB* Orange Pealings FIGURING THE AVERAGE cost per space at $1,200 it would cost $1 million—give or take a few thousand—for the 670 addi tional midtown off-street parking Spaces which the Mayor’s Com mittee on Downtown Develop ment has recommended for Chap el Hill during the next 10 years. And the $1,200 figure is right conservative, being about one third less than the per-space cost for the town’s first projected lot on E. Rosemary St. —What price comfort, o frail humanity?! COUNTY AGENT DON $. - Matfees&n; wko -is disposing of his 93 head of fine Holstein dairy cattle at public auction next Wednesday, said yesterday he sought Lloyds of London in surance coverage against rain on the day of the sale, but finally discarded the idea when charges began to appear excessive. Local agents were in contact with Lloyds, the world wide insurers of everything from Elizabeth Taylor’s marriages to Zsa Zsa’s out satisfactory rates. However, in the end Mr. Matheson said he decided to take his own risk. IN THB COURSE OF THE Chapel Hill School Board’s con sideration of “satellite” lunch room feeding for the coming year (story in this issue) it was brought out that the Northside School lunchroom last year re ceived a ton and a quarter of turkey from the U. S. Govern ment free during the entire year. Such food, it was noted, could not be served from a warming kitchen under existing -regula tions. Cooperating lunchrooms receive from the government all they can use of certain commodi ties such as powdered eggs, milk, and flour. APPROPRIATE TO LOCAL schools, too, the HCL of “free” public schools was underlined. Pupil fees in some Chapel Hill schools this year may be $10 or more, subject to the pupil’s course load. The state textbook rental tab has been increased from $4 to $6. (The proposed $2 fee reduction envisioned via the defeated school tax increase ref erendum in Chapel Hill last spring would have balanced off the increase.) HIGH WINDS IN A LATE afternoon thunderstorm Satur day sent a huge tree in the yard of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Walker Sr. crashing across Tryon Street in Hillsboro, severing telephone lines. Had the direction of the wind been different, the tree un . doubtedly would have crashed through the roof of the house, creating great damage and pos sible injuries. In a matter of< minutes, according to Mr. and Mrs. Walker, town, telephone and power company workers were at the scene repairing dam age and clearing the street. Ear ly arrivals directing the work were Mayor Fred Claytor, Mayor Pro-tem Frank Walker and Street Supt. Fred Sharpe, all of whom were praised by the Walkers for their timely work.
