HILLSBORO §HO CHAPEL HILL, , i HinH .^“^T" “FOREST SERVICE GREEN has gone to war." To revive the old cigarette commercial slogan is to summarize the action of the District office of the N. C. Forest Service in Chapel Hill, which has lately fixed up a 200 gallon pumper fire truck from an Arimy surplus weapons car rier. Forest service' trucks are traditionally painted a forest green. But nobody gives the right-of-way to a green fire truck, ©r so the Forest Service crew here reasoned. So, they painted it a bright traditional fire engine red. It’s the first such departure from the pure fiat at tradition in the Service. CHAPEL HILL SCHOOL Board members, heeding the suggestion of a News reader as published in this column recent ly, have fixed up a handy map of the local school district out lining the five elementary school attendance areas. It is available free at the office of the Super intendent of Schools, is posted in the offices of school princi pals, and was published in the Chapel Hill .Weekly last Sunday. ‘PAPA D’ EDWARD DANZI ger is completely painting and redecorating his downtown place in Chapel Hill for the first time . since Danziger’s Candy Kitchen was opened here in 4939. It was a mammouth job clearing out —•- the place to-the bar© walls for painters this week. All of the hundreds of framed photos that cover the walls had to be num bered and the numbers set down on- a chart so that they could, be put back up in the same jig saw puzzle order. THAT WAS A MIGHTY IN teresting story in the Sunday papers this week about Pete Mullis, gatekeeper extraordin aire for the past quarter-century at Kenan Stadium home foot ball games. Prof. Mullis of the UNC physical education faculty is in charge of the 300 game time employees who work at the grid contests. The • story by sports publicist Bob Quincy didn't mention one true fable that Pete tells about that fabu lous UNC - Texas game here in 1948. About the ticket taker who actually turned down a $500 cash bribe from a Texas fan to let him into the game. Pete joking ly says he directed the gatekeep er when be told him about it, “You just call for me next time that happens?" THE TOWN OF CHAPEL HAS - rejected a bid of $5.99 by a Ra leigh man* as his* purchase offer for a four - room house on the N. Columbia St. site of the pro posed municipal center. That house and several others on town property that were offered for sale on sealed bids will have to be removed from their pres ent locations. Town Manager Bob Peck said he’d seek more proposals, ^probably on the pur chase and removal of all dwell ings concerned.
