Man ire given grant to Japan for next year Dr. George Philip Mature, pro fessor of bacteriology in the Uni versity School of Medicine, will take a year’s leave of absence from UNC to conduct research at the Distitute for Virus Research of “Kyoto University in Japan, beginning July 1. He has been awarded the Alan Gregg Travel Fellowship in Medical Education from the China Medical Board of Ne’w York for the year of study. Dr. Manire’s work will be in the institute’s Department of Bio physics with Dr. Noboru Higashi, a distinguished scientist -whose work is in Pr. Manire’s field of interest. While in Kyoto, an old city near Tokyo, Dr. Manire plan's to continue his own virus studies begun at UNC and to work for proficiency in the new tech niques developed by Dr- Higashi and his associates. Dr. Manire will leave Chapel Hill for the Far East around July 1, his wife and two children accompanying him. Though most of his efforts will be confined to the research program at Ky oto, he hopes. to visit Taiwan, Korea, and the Philippines, and to spend a short period ' partici pating in the teaching program in ' bacteriology in a medical school in one of the countries. Dr. Manire, who joined the UNC medical faculty in 1950, holds the B.S. and M.S. degrees from North Texas State College, and the Ph.D.' degree from the University of California. During the 1956 calendar year he held a Fulbright Research Scholarship grant; for research at the Sta tens Seruminstitut, in Copen hagen, a Danish biological pro duction and research center. OFFER ‘SUMMER ASIA PROGRAM* A summer Asia Program to provide secondary and elemen tary school teachers with infor mation about Asia, including sub ject matter, teaching methods and materials, will be offered for a second year by the University during its first Summer session, June 10-July 19.
