Mermen Wil hams to be speaker at women's world affairs meet A World Affairs Conference and a Leadership Training Work shop were planned at the exec utive board meeting of the North Carolina Council of Wo men’s Organizations heldT recent ly at the University. G. Mennen Williams, Assistant^ Secretary of State for African Affairs, will deliver the featured address at the World Affairs Conference to be held on the UNC campus March 14. His top ic is “Democracy and the Emer ging Nations.” The, event is co sponsored by the Council. The Leadership Training* Workshop, conducted annually in Chapel HiU, will take place this year from July 15 through July 18. “Those who are interested in the art of leadership as it ap plies to women in today’s world are especially invited to attend the 1963 workshop,” said Mrs. dames A. Odom, Raleigh, first vice president. “Anyone whose membership is in good standing in an affiliate organization is el igible,” she continued. The workshop will include courses on advanced parliamen tary procedure, leadership skills, public speaking and world af fairs. Special attractions will in clude a Fine Arts evening with accent on the arts as they re late to North Carolina’s Tercen tenary. Participation ins the workshop has been set at a. max imum of 150. Applications from eligible' members of affiliate or ganizations, accompnaied by the 'Great Decisions '63' series planned on TV i Tar Heels will have an oppor tunity to become acquainted with foreign policy problems this year through the 8-program se-j ries, “Great Decisions 1963” which will begin Monday, Feb. 4, 1963 at 8 p. m. over WUNC TV, Channel 4. The program is an annual na tion - wide review by citizens in their own communities of im portant nation - wide problems. It is prepared by National Edu cational Television. The ‘Fact Sheets, which con tain an introductory booklet for neighborhood listening - discus sion groups, , contain booklets, eight opinion ballots, reading lists, discussion questions, artd tips for leaders ahd participants. They may be obtained for $1.65 each from the Bureau of Com munity Adult Education, Univer sity of North Carolina Extension Division, Box 1050, Chapel Hill, N. C. The topics and program dates are as follows: Feb. 4, “Com mon Market — Blueprint for a new Europe?”; Feb. 11, “Red China and the U. S. S. R.—How firm an alliance?”; Feb. 18, “Algeria — What future?”; Feb. 25, “Spain — End of the Franco era?”; March 4, “India — Is Democracy working?”; March 11, “Laos and Viet-Nam—South east Asia in danger?”; March 18, “Alliance for Progress — New ideal for the Americas?”; and March 25, “Peace — What Problems and prospects?”^ $6.00 registration fee will be ac cepted until the maximum is reached. Officers of the group include: Mrs. G. V. Lawrence, Charlotte, president; Mrs. James A. Odum, Raleigh, first vice president; Miss Asenath Cooke,. Greensboro, second vice president; Mrs. J. E. Winslow, Hurdle Mills, third vice president; Mrs.' Theodore CrosSen, Chapel Hill, secretary; and Mrs. Chase H. Benson, Greensboro, treasurer. Twenty-eight of the 33 state wide member organizations were present at the Chapel Hill meet ing. Pre-nuptial courtesies-fete Miss Joy Carr Mrs. Clarence D. Jones and Mrs. Edwin J. Hamlin were host esses at a luncheon on Satur day, Jan. 19, In honor of Miss Joy Carr, bride - elect, whose marriage to Joslph Comer Bar rett III will take place Satur day, Jan. 26, at the St. Thomas More Chapel in Chapel Hill. The Pine Room of The Caro lina Inn in Chapel Hill was the setting for the luncheon, where a motif of silver and white were used in place cards and flowers, with Miss Carr’s place being marked by a bridal figur ine. The following guests were present: Miss Carr, the honoree; Mrs. G. Paul Carr, her mother; Mrs. Sarah Heitcamp, Mrs. Em ily O’Neill, Miss Marjorie Crane, Miss Kay Taylor, Miss Helen Midgette, Miss Julie Latane, all of Chapel Hill; Miss Cornelia Burch and Miss Carolyn West of ^Fayetteville; Miss Catherine Roberts of Raleigh; Mrs. Willi am Moore of Graham; and Mrs. H. W. Moore of Hillsboro. Gifts of crystal and electric appliances were presented to the honoree by the hostesses. , Mrs. Garland Miller and Mrs. Everette Forrest entertained at Mrs. Forrest’s home Saturday, Jan. 12, from 3 to 5 p. m. with a tea honoring Miss Joy Carr, bride - elect. Mrs. H. W. Moore and Mrs. Elmer Dowdy poured coffee assisted by Miss Henriet ta Brown, Miss Catherine Rob erts and Mrs. John Forrest. Mrs. H. iW. Moore and Mrs. Bill Moore entertained Miss Joy Carr, bride - elect, with a cof fee hour Saturday, Jan. 19, from 10:30 to 12:00, with thirty guests present. Miss Carr was presented a corsage on her ar rival. Gifts of linen and china were presented her by the host esses. BIBLE STUDY COURSE AT FIRST BAPTIST Hillsboro First Baptist Church is holding a Bible Study course in Matthew’s Gospel each Wed nesday evening at 7:00 p. m. with the pastor, Rev.
