San «■ ford told the Chapel Hill school - children last Thursday when they asked his advice for a person planning to enter politics: “Ev erybody ought to take an interest in politics.—. . . As far as run ning for office, that comes nat urally." And so mought it be hereabouts! !?y'*__ A NUMBER OF CHAPEL HILL businessmen and municipal offi _ cials will accompany Merchants Association Director Joe Augus tine to Smithfield today - where the Chamber of Commerce will put on a demonstration of civic projects carried out in the past year. Smithfield is currently in the running for national designa tion as the All-American City in its population category. The local interest is piqued to see how such an accomplishment could foe wrought in Chapel Hill. - FIRE CHIEF JIM STEWART returned last weekend from a one-week firemen’s instructors conference, attended by about 3,000 fire chiefs from around the world in Memphis, Tenn. Whil#' he was gone last Thursday the Town received a lone bid, at an official opening last Thursday, for * new fire truck. American LaFrance Will supply the vehicle, in keeping with a previous of fer, for $20,500 RESIDENTS OF COKER HILLS voted Monday night to name their one-acre neighborhood park lot on Clayton Road in honor of the late E. C. Leonard, surveyor for Coker College’s properties in Chapel Hill and consultant in the recent planning for the play ground. The residents are pri vately subscribing money for de velopment of the park this spring. * Dr. William Waddell was elected ‘President of the E. C. With that introduction the Pealer re ports that County Tax Supervis or Sam Gattis, speaking before the Chapel Hill Rotary Club last night, gave figures to show that of the eight fastest growing counties in N. C. over, the last decade, Orange County’s per capita real tax load was just a bout average. Mecklenburg had the highest load, found to be $9.66 per $1,000 worth of true property value. Orange was in third plcae with $6.60, whereas the average for the eight was $6.18. ONLY ONE SERIOUS FIRE was reported in the Chapel Hill area during the height of the bad weather last week. The kit chen at the home of Mrs. Wil lie Mae Brown, 611 Nunn St., Chapel Hill, was badly damaged in a 4:45 p. m. blaze Tuesday.
