C., THURSDAY, MAY 23, 1963 24 PAGES TODAY Orange Pealings THE TRADITIONAL FLOODS of storm - tide were averted at Fowler’s Food Store day before yesterday by a store-front dam built with merchandise. Manag er Earl Blackburn, watching the water from W. Franklin St. edging up to the building, quick ly ordered the construction of a sand - bag type of dam in front of the double doors with small bags of salt. They formed • water • tight barrier and ef fectively insulated the premises, but left the goods right soggy as the salt water receded. MOST SURPRISED FELLOW in town, at the height of the storm, was the construction worker who sought refuge in the tool shed at the building site of the new Chapel Hill fire station. Winds toppled the shed — mid set the building plans flying to parts unknown— Add storm notes: Partial casualty of the faig blow was a section of the railing on the decaying1 wooden cupola atop town hall...! Somehow Hillsboro and north ern Orange escaped thfe fury of the elements. No suhdttcant damage reported there. THE TOWN OF CHAPEL Hill, according to press release from the N. C. State Motor Club, was the seventh safest city of over 10,000 in North Carolina during 1962, from the stand point of traffic fatalities. There were no such deaths in the Hill during the-year, but it ranked seventh bouthe basis of its mo tor vehicle registration total of 8,668 — being considerably be hind first - ranking Shelby, for instance, with 14,614 vehicles registered and a similar 100 per cent record. THE U. S. SUPREME COURT reversals of sit-in cases on Mon day had an effect in Chapel Hill the next day. Trial of two UNC student defendants, charg ed with trespass by the manage ment of The Patio, was continu ed by the court pending further interpretation of the effect the high court ruling may have on the trespass laws of North Car olina. The two, ope a white stu dent and one a Negro, refused the order of manager Henry Andrews Jr., to leave the place, being there on a senior class party. PfCKETERS PICKETED THIS picketers at the Armed Forces •Day Retreat ceremony in front of the Chapel Hill Postofflce last Saturday. Protest began with a combined student and lo cal disarmament group that pa raded at the same time as the Air Force ROTC drill team marched downtown for the flag pole retreat ceremony. The counter - protest formed at the postoffice when a group of stu dents organized by Ruffin Dorm students turned out with signs decrying the peace marchers. ONE OF THE ROWDIEST EVE nings of the spring was report ed on campus last Friday night, according to Chapel Hill police reports. The Pikas and Sigma Chis — at least several of their brethren — allegedly swapped BB shots m the big fraternity court.
